Smile SPX is... feeling that SPRING urge, I think.

SPRING, when all good burbs get that urge to boink a perch or fall in love with their parront.

Recently the SPX'ter has found a new vocalization/song and its pretty awesome! He warbles and yodels and makes deep and higher ranged sounds in a song that last a few moments. I've never heard this before and since we are beginning to experience Spring here I wondered if he's in the mood for loveeee?

I checked tons of Youtube videos to see if any other budgies make this type of call and never heard anything like it.

That's very cool! Is there a bird in your area that SPX is copying?

Yes, spring has been in the air for awhile at our house too. Comet and Scooter has been shredding newspapers daily to "build their nest". I started calling Comet "mommy" and he did not like it! They are so tired at night from "building" that we're hoping they are done soon and back to being normal boys again.

Awwe, shredding for nesting is cute and you are lucky Comet and Scooter are only shredding newspapers for their nest. I've seen burbs that have the nesting urge eat entire perches of wood down to mere shavings for their nests when they are in that breeding mood!

The new songs started a while back in February and I noticed he's doing it more often and usually when I am talking to him and interacting. I doubt he's copying any bird songs from around here as I've recently moved and he's being seeing and hearing all sorts of new birds he's never known of before and this new song started a while back.

He's been chewing a perch and having romantic moments with a mirror and a mineral perch so I figure he's really in the MOOD!

And I thought newspapers were bad! I think I've only ever had one male Budgie who chewed the perch. Of course these days most of my perches are rope, but I always leave one that's wood in case they need to chew.

What do you put on the bottom of your cage? And does SPX play on the bottom of his cage? I asked this question over in the "cages" thread, but am curious what SPX uses.

I put newspapers on the bottom of the cage for SPX he never goes to the bottom of his cage so he doesn't chew paper or shred it. Most newsprint these days are made with ink that is soy based as it gives better color and is environmentally safe.

If you are concerned that your birds are chewing or ripping paper that might have been recycled and bleached maybe you can switch to kitchen paper towels for a month while they are in their breeding chewing mood. They do stop shredding after a while and will abandon the paper at the bottom of the cage.

You can also give them a roll of paper that is used for an adding machine its a lot of fun for them to pull on the roll while they rip and tear it, it can be found in most places that sell office supply's like Staples etc.

Yes, they only shred paper for about 6-8 weeks (thanks goodness), this the third year. The fun part for them is being able to be under the papers while they shred. I put a double layer of newspapers on the bottom of the cage and they only shred the bottom layer. They don't want to expose themselves so they won't shred the top layer LOL! Snowball doesn't shred papers either and she has fun watching the papers move while they are underneath. Good entertainment for her since she is molting and is pretty quiet.

We tried brown paper on a roll, but it's way too heavy for them. And I worry about tongue cuts with heavy paper. The adding tape is a cute idea, but they are so small the roll would be too big for them and they may be scared of it. Thanks for the idea though. They do love their paper toys very much. I always scoop up small ones when I find them.
