Cockatiel Pooping In Seed Dish

Our cockatiel, Donald, has been pooping in his seed dish. We see the evidence every morning.

We have a lovebird and two budgies who used to go into Donald's cage and eat from his seed dish, even though we have a large tray of seed and other food on top of Donald's cage that they eat.

We've since closed the door to Donald's cage so that all our birds eat from this tray.

Do you think that Donald's pooping in his seed dish for a psychological reason?

Could he be lacking in any nutrients?

I've read that many tiels poop in their water dishes, and some will dunk food in their water dishes, but I haven't seen anything that mentions them pooping in their seed dishes.

Does anyone know why Donald might be doing this? He's been doing it for a while, not just since we closed his cage door during the day.

Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

Bad Donald BAD!

If the dish is one that can be moved anywhere you want I'd try relocating the dish somewhere else in the cage, if its up higher he will have to do some fancy crawling on the bars or hang upside down to poop in the dish. This might deter him from pooping in it anymore.

LOL @ "Bad Donald BAD!" You don't know the half of what that bird gets up to, and his antics! I'm sure that you can imagine, though...

Thanks, Mr. Peepers. We will move his dish.

We are still wondering why he was doing it...?

What makes birds do half of the crazy things they do?

Was he pooping in his dish when the other birds were visiting and snarfing seeds from his dish? Did the pooping just start when the door was closed and he was the only bird eating from there?

Does he eat at the community tray with the other birds now as well?

Might just be an odd little habit, most birds will poop in a certain place in their cages or aviaries. I don't know why! You could try using a covered seed dish perhaps?

Bad Yuki BAD BAD Paulchen pooping where they eat.

Worse I have to deal with is the odd floofie that gently floats down off a preening bird and lands in the seed dish laying on top of the seeds.

His Highness SPX starts freaking out because the evil floofie is preventing him from going to his beloved food source.

Lord forbid the dang budgie will move that evil floofie away and continue to nom his face off.

That's just silly thinking! SILLY :eek:ut:
