I was told that Sam (my budgie) is a female because of the white around her nostrils.
Well I got her out just now and she's sitting on the table in front of me and her cere is mostly blue with a little purple. It's normally pink but when we first had her it would be blue around Bud and pink when I had her.
Is it normal for it to alternate like this, and can someone please tell me how I can tell what she is? I'm confused because it changed yet again and from what I know, blue means male, and brown/pink/white means female.
Sam looks like a hen to me in the earlier pic you posted of her, her cere should change in texture and color when she is in breeding condition. Have you ever seen her cere turn a crusty brown yet? How old is she?
If her cere hasn't ever gone crusty and she's over a year old then you have one of those newer breeds that only an experienced breeder could tell which sex you have.
I got her last month and I don't know how old she is. I read that the stripes on their heads go away when they get older, and she has silver ones that I can barely see because her head is white. Her cere hasn't turned brown and crusty at all yet.
Sometimes they don't even need to let their cere change and they show you they are cock birds. I've seen young birds get that urge very early in life that causes them to jump on other birds and do the budgie boogie hoping to become a papa bird.
If that's her in the photo Mr Peepers posted then you've got a hen Young birds all start off with that pink cere and immature/out of condition hens will have a blue cere with a bit of white around the nares. Once she reaches maturity and she comes into condition it will go brown and crusty. My hens go blue when they're not in the mood for breeding
When I took Sammy to the the vet to get her nails trimmed because they were so long that they were getting caught on everything, he told us that I have three males.
I don't think I do. But that does explain a lot.
