yesterday upon walking home, we found a box outside of our appartment building with blankets on top. so we peeked inside and saw this little common grackle. hes just a fledgling but he has a half healed fracture on his leg but is fully capable of using the leg and foot, just not putting much weight on it.
we are feeding him moist cat food, seed, and once hes eating more on his own, im going to introduce some corn and peas and mealworms. once his leg is healed, we are going to teach him to be a bird and forage and fly. once hes capable of feeding himself, we are going to release him.
hes quite sweet too
he reminds me of a turkey vulture so thats how he earned his name lol
awww good for you hes so cute, lucky he got left at the right building, so someone just left him there? Thats odd. i rescued a house sparrow once and it was lots of fun it was even better to see him fly away
yeah someone just dumped him there and we dont know who lol but we're glad. we just laughed and called it fate and took him inside. set up the cage we were going to tell on kijiji and put him in there with a blanket and a low perch with a food and water dish.
a bit, but better us than someone who has no clue how to care for them. we've done this quite a bit. just 2 months ago we found an exhausted brown creeper. he was just tired from migrating so we housed him for a night to rest, eat, drink, and basically just be safe. that was an adult. he ate his fill of meal worms, bathed, drank and the next day he was ready to be released.
i tried caring for a fledgling starling. but he had some injuries and despite treating them, he gave up and refused to eat. he gave up on life and hours later he died.
ive raised a baby pigeon and released her too successfully.
vulture is showing signs he will be releasable and will make it. hes strong. only concern is teaching him to be a bird. we handle him only for feedings. other than that hes left alone. we dont want him to imprint on humans. hes young but not too young.
we arent that social so chances of someone knowing we live here are slim as we called everyone we know and none of them know anything. regardless, we arent complaining. its weird but he is in need of our care and we wont turn him away.
hes being fed every 2-3 hours as much as he will accept. he drinks on his own and hes trying to fly despite the leg. wish he wouldnt lol
he's awesome! when I was in the US I had these landing on me cause I had food, I was throwing little pieces in the air and they were catching them and landing on me and people just stood by like haha! I hope he survives and gets on well
Yeah, the boat tailed grackles aren't shy at all lol. I used to feed them in high school at lunch and they would come right next to me and perch on my legs. I was the crazy bird lady. It didn't help that I mimicked their noises and they would talk back to me Tho I did that more to freak people out that anything else
just a little update, hes eating on his own completely, no supplement feedings at all. im slowly adding other perches so he can start exercising that leg since hes getting back full use of it. he can stand steady on it now, but hes still got a bit of a limp. hes still not ready to be released. i want to make sure that leg is good before he goes. that and ive yet to get bugs into his diet, taking it slow. he got some hard pellets added to his cat food today. hes had brocholli and peas and likes them. he even ate a bit of spray millet.
