kiki and chinta

got some photos of them tonight they LOVE their timothy hay! they are mother (kiki) and daughter (chinta)

my fiance got kiki before we moved in together and she ended up being pregnant. she had chinta and her brothers but we found homes for the boys as we did not want inbreeding and we kept chinta as she was the only girl. her and kiki do everything together. they sleep together, groom eachother... theyre cute. they dont like being held much but they dont mind being petted, chinta likes me better though lol kiki is my fiance's through and through. kiki watches tv...
kiki is over 2 years old and chinta is a year

anyways, photos!
kiki grooming (best way to tell them apart is kiki's sad eyes and nicked ears. chinta's eyes are rounder and more happy looking lol)

chinta on wood bridge, kiki eating (food holder is a stone thing from work... cleaned it and it makes a great food bowl and hiding place!)

They're so cute! I know absolutely nothing about Chinchillas. What do they like to do? Do they play with toys like bird's do?

they chew their toys lol

they are a rodent, about the size of a small bunny like a dwarf. female chinchillas can get up to 2lbs but ours are only 1 lb (small from bad breeding, kiki was petstore).

they need high quality chinchilla pellets (must be hay based) and timothy hay. alfalfa hay is not that good for them as its got too much calcium for them. they can not get a lot of treats (maximum 3 treats a day, which are craisons, dried kiwi, dried rose hips, and other dried fruits). they need a lot of space to climb and run, ours are in a 2 level cage which measures 6'x2'x3'! they climb and jump everywhere and they are generally nocturnal. they need toys and things to chew, places to sleep and hide, and need to be kept in an environment no warmer than 75 degrees ferenheit or they risk heat stroke. the cooler the better! they require dust baths several times a week to get rid of oils from their fur and to keep them clean. they are very social and do well either with lots of attention from their owner or with a buddy. generally same sex pairs get along best. females kept together with a male around will fight. whats neat about them is the way they eat. they hold their food in one hand. they stand on 2 feet often. their whiskers are also rediculously long. theyre relatively clean, if litter trained (if not they kick aspen bedding everywhere!)

all in all theyre actually easy to care for. they have some special requirements but theyre not complicated.

they can live 22 years!!

theyre picky too! if kiki doesnt like her cage layout, she changes it herself. you will see her pushing her pots around and pushing anything away she doesnt like!

they run for about 150-400 depending on the colour.... my fiance found kiki for 80 at a local exotic pet store. they are expensive sometimes... but care is cheap compared to birds i find
