they chew their toys lol
they are a rodent, about the size of a small bunny like a dwarf. female chinchillas can get up to 2lbs but ours are only 1 lb (small from bad breeding, kiki was petstore).
they need high quality chinchilla pellets (must be hay based) and timothy hay. alfalfa hay is not that good for them as its got too much calcium for them. they can not get a lot of treats (maximum 3 treats a day, which are craisons, dried kiwi, dried rose hips, and other dried fruits). they need a lot of space to climb and run, ours are in a 2 level cage which measures 6'x2'x3'! they climb and jump everywhere and they are generally nocturnal. they need toys and things to chew, places to sleep and hide, and need to be kept in an environment no warmer than 75 degrees ferenheit or they risk heat stroke. the cooler the better! they require dust baths several times a week to get rid of oils from their fur and to keep them clean. they are very social and do well either with lots of attention from their owner or with a buddy. generally same sex pairs get along best. females kept together with a male around will fight. whats neat about them is the way they eat. they hold their food in one hand. they stand on 2 feet often. their whiskers are also rediculously long. theyre relatively clean, if litter trained (if not they kick aspen bedding everywhere!)
all in all theyre actually easy to care for. they have some special requirements but theyre not complicated.
they can live 22 years!!
