I have a guide on my website on raising chicks its a pretty good place to start. As for a termometer, you'll need one to test food temps and one in the brooder.

Would a chicken incubator work for a brooder?

Maybe, I honestly haven't tried one. What temp does it stay at? Which one do you have?

The chicken incubator won't work. Incubators are different to brooders. The incubator is for hatching eggs, once hatched the babies are moved into a brooder.
