I moved to the Army base I currently live on in 2010. I have been volunteering many many days not only because it keeps me busy, but it's fun to do. I log every hour I volunteer on to an Army website that tracks hours (I thought it would look good on a resume). I was kind of bummed when I heard there is a volunteer award ceremony going on tomorrow (4/19/2012) because I will be flying to Texas to plan my wedding tomorrow! So I was unable to attend.. WELL my step father (Who is the big boss on this base) had my mother, my fiance, and I meet him at headquarters. We walked in to a meeting room and there was a a bunch of soldiers sitting there. My father started their meeting and I looked over at my fiance and asked why we were even here.. After their short meeting the man in charge of volunteer services stood up and awarded me with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Army and the Presidents Volunteer Service Award! President Obama sent me a letter and everything! I was so honored. I knew I had A LOT of volunteer hours but I really didn't think anything of it! I never knew I would get such an awesome award! The military base I live on apparently submitted my name to the White House and if I am picked to be the Presidential Volunteer of the year, I will get to visit the White House and be awarded a metal from our very own president! HOW COOL! (I won't get my hopes up for that part though, I'm sure there are thousands of volunteers that are entered every year!)
I just thought I would share my day with you guys! I love volunteering to help our soldiers and their families.
Oh and the only thing that stinks is they spelled my name wrong!!! Oh well.. Still an honor! Lol!
That's fantastic Meghan, I bet that would have felt absolutely wonderful knowing that you've been recognized!! I'm sure you obviously love doing it anyways but it's nice when people understand how much you've done for others. Congrats!
