meet Buddy

i have been busy raising a baby house sparrow these last few days
his name is Buddy, i found him at 9 days old, attacked by a starling and severely dehydrated and chilled.

here is a photo of him when he first came home, notice how red his skin is, showing dehydration.

and here are photos from today... hes so darn cute. he is going to be released once he is ready

these ones were from the other day, but were adorable

It's definitely the season for baby birds.
He is a cutie.
My bro raised blackbirds once.
He was pooped!
Theses babies need lots of feeds don't they?

when i first found him he had to be fed every hour. then every 2 hours. he is at every 3 hours now and starting to wean and fledge. its been a busy time LOL

and i'd think the only feeling you'd really be able to see is "im hungry!!!" lol

i am curious when he is released will he be able to survive on his on? i mean knowing how to find food since his parents was not there and knowing about dangers? since he is being cared for by a person will he not be scared of people? i am just wondering cause i always heard that you should not mess with a baby bird and i just want to know if he will be ok once released. i have helped adult birds before but never a baby .

i do not handle him aside from feedings/cleaning up after feedings when he didnt know how to wipe his beak. he can only see outside and his cage is as natural as i can get it, hes got a grass mat for the floor to find his own food in, i bring bugs and such from outside too and also seeded grass and other plants and seeds i see wild sparrows eat, hes got a bird feeder in his cage (we always have our feeders with). he is not the first baby ive raised. i have successfully released a baby pigeon and a baby common grackle. i know what i am doing
i know not to mess with fledglings if the parents are not around, but this guy was attacked by a starling (thats how i noticed him) and out of a nest, not fully feathered and very cold and dehydrated. i watched for a long while, no parents came to feed him, so i took him home. this guy may be a little comfortable around us, but he still runs away from us he is releasable

He's so cute Casey, great job on taking care of him! I'm sure he'll do fantastic once he's released because he had you as his foster mommy.
