I Have a Problem...

I LOVE animals.

I have gotten into a new craze, well actually, I have wanted one for about a year. I guess a new flame has been lit. ANYWAY, I want a hamster. They seem like such fun little animals. Anybody have one?

I've had quite a few hamsters. I think they're wonderful. I do prefer rats though. They have great personalities

I had lots of hamsters, I used to breed them, my Mom currently has one, cream puff. They're great, but they don't live all that long. I've had a lot of rats too. If you get a hamster be sure to get the little car they can roll around in, it's too much fun

I like Hamsters, they're great, I'm a bit afraid of them though because I haven't met a Hamster yet that doesn't bite.
Rats on the other hand I LOVE! They NEVER bite (there are the few acceptions such as un-neutered hormonal Males), they are super smart, and they are super loving!
If they are legal to keep where you are I'd get a Rat! (I know a lot of people are weirded out by their tails, I was too until I got one then I thought they're cute!) Oh, and Rats are super clean too.

I've had several hampsters! I love them! They really don't live long though.. the last two I had died of diabetes and the other from phnemonia! I don't think I've had one that lived over 2-3 years.

We have had many hamsters over the years when my sisters were younger, I also had a gerbil, 3 guinea pigs, and a rat. I was never interested in hamsters but thats no fault of the hamsters, my sisters hammies were always friendly and cute, they just were never my thing.

I feel like hamsters are a pet that I would love for a month, and then i'd lose interest. Plus they stink. Lol.

Thanks for all the advice! I'll probably won't get one until I have a place of my own, but I really enjoy learning about different pets. I'm going to look into rats and hamsters. I just love pets. If anyone's has seen the show petkeeping with Marc Marrone then you know who my idol is. I want as many pets as he has . But I'm going to look into all that.

I watch Marc Marrone. Rats are really good as pets as well. Rats can be one person pets, I had one that was my baby big time, I could turn him on his back and hold him like a baby, he would kiss me and cling to me, but he didn't care for anyone else and my mom didn't care much for him. One of my others was as sweet as could be and my mom really liked him, I got him when he was a year old and the other I got as a tiny baby and raised myself. I don't have any rats anymore though , I just have guinea pigs and rabbits.

I had 3 rats before, they were lovely! My Dumbo was the sweetest thing ever. She was a people rat... she would rather spend time on my shoulder than with my other 2 rats.
Every time I would go over to their cage she would come to the bars begging to be let out and when I went to grab her she'd give me kisses. When I would bring them into the bathroom to play around on the floor I would sit on the toilet and she would just try her hardest to climb up my legs to be with me. (not fun when you're not wearing pants, lol) She was the only one of my rats I could just bring into my room and let her run around on the bed because I know she wasn't going to take off and try to escape because she was so attached to me. I miss her.
I'd say go for a rat! The only down side is their average lifespan is only about 2-3 years old, sometimes older, sometimes younger.

How long do rats live?

I'm sorry KTyne. I guess I missed your post. Thanks for all of the information. 2-3 years! I'll still be in high school so maybe I can "persuade" my mom. Odds are against me though.

They usually live on average 2 years, they can live shorter or longer depending. They are prone to getting tumors and respiratory infections as they age too so you would need a good vet fund.

One major problem would be space! I am not sure where I would keep any rats. I'm just going to have to think about it for a while. I'll continue to do research on both animals though.

Yeah, rats need big cages so you'd definitely need some space to donate to their cage. (They need at least 2 square feet per rat if I remember correctly).
