Hermit Crabs

So I'm getting quite serious lately about adding Hermit Crabs to our little animal family. I've been thinking about it for a few months now and I think it'd be really neat to have them! I've always loved Crabs, would always catch them at the beach near my grandparent's house (not Hermit Crabs but regular crabs).

I'm quite excited if I do go through with this, I think it'd be really cool to have some little crabbies of my own.

Just thought I'd share. I'll update you guys on whether or not I get the little guys!

I love them too Kayla. I went to buy buy some last week and petsmart was sold out of them and the other critters I wanted (turtles, tortise, Iguana) .

Yeah, I don't see Hermit Crabs around here that often. I saw some at the Reptile store last week and I really wanted to bring them home but I didn't have the money at the time! The thing is, is that pet stores tell you totally wrong care for them. They need at least 5 gallons of tank per crab, high humidity, and temps between 70-80F. I have a friend that has like 6 of them and she says their conditions are hard to keep stable. That's the only reason I haven't gotten them already!

I've had them before, but I didn't really think they were all that hard to care for . They're really fun to play with too and now days you can get them these really cool shells

Yeah, she didn't say they were hard to care for, just hard to keep their humidity and temps right without flucuating all of the time.
I like natural looking shells myself.

Me too! I think when I upgrade Gaia to a bigger tank soon I will use her old 10 gallon for Hermit Crabs.

I had a hermit crab for a long time when I was younger!! I loved it! I would make little mazes out of cardboard and see how long it took for the crab to exit! I'm not sure how much longer it would have lived.. It died in a fire at my dads house. Poor thing.. Not sure why my dad forgot to take it out.

Awww, poor Crab. That is something I'm terrified of is having a fire in my house because there is no way I would be able to get any of the animals out. The cats could get out if I left the door open but the rest would be left while I grabbed my son and got us out. I've been so paranoid about that ever since Mason was born..

Aww well just make sure you don't leave the oven on and what not You should be fine! My dad set his house fire intentionally... He had a lot of unresolved issues is the best way to put it, I guess. I'll never understand why he didn't just put my pets outside and then do what he wanted! I guess if you're planning to do something crazy you don't really think about your children's pets...

Nah, I don't think pets would even cross someone's mind if they were planning on doing something like that.

Thats terrible Meghan, I'm so sorry .

I'm paranoid of fires too Kayla. The rare times I actually go somewhere, I go nuts (thinking of everything that could happen) till I get back home and make sure everybody and everything is okay. First thing I do is a head count of everyone, once I see they are safe I can breath again

Awww, Shannon! I don't do that every time I go out but I do that if I've been away and someone has been watching the animals. I get really paranoid that they aren't caring for them properly and worry about someone getting sick or hurt or something while I'm away!

The only two birds I've lost in the last 10 years have been when I had to go somewhere so I'm probably a bit more nurotic about it . I usually only go anywhere once a month so I don't have to stress like that too often.

That makes sense if it's happened to you before, I'd be paranoid like that too if I had birds dying on me when I left! Even if it had nothing to do with me leaving.
