Talking American kestrels

Soooo I'm not getting my red tail until January, mostly because the breeder I wanna get it from doesn't think this clutch of eggs is fertile. Well, he said call in January to make sure, but they wont be ready until after then I assume. So I have plenty of time for that.

Well it's the falconry fair on the 14th coming up and I intend on buying all of my equipment there. I will now get all my red tail stuff and my new mews (well... a shed to sleep in) at Christmas out of whatever money I get. I have perches and everything, I just need a shed and leg equipment. Anyways, I have decided I'd like to get my self a little male imprinted American kestrel.

I worked with one at the centre for a while and I have to admit, though being super super tiny they are definitely brave. Reason being I want an imprint is so it is able to feed without me having to cut the weight down. I've only ever worked with very big birds, but tiny birds have too much margin of error going on so I don't wanna mess up. I wouldn't want an imprint red tail though so yeah, the bird will be happy to take food from me, which is good! I have found two ads that looked good to me, one was stating they had one 2012 imprinted baby left so I have sent them a text asking whether or not it is male or female and whether or not they can deliver etc etc. Hopefully I will hear back soon. I really want a male, so I hope it isn't a female (I WOULD have a female if somebody gave it to me but as an imprint I'd rather it didn't lay eggs or anything for me ). Another person has some babies available FOR imprinting, so I would raise it my self. I would love to do that BUT I have to wait until the 15th at least before I could get one. Plus I need to organise a courier if they can't make it

I'll let you all know what happens, I am very excited! Hopefully it will take my mind of my current troubles

Thank you both! I really love them. If I can fly and maintain a raptor this tiny I will know I'm good

I know he's crèche reared and three and a half weeks old. I could have him now but I buy all my stuff on the 14th so I can't I also can't pick him up or have the person deliver so we have a courier coming

I am a bit worried though about weight management I've been told they eat twice a day to maintain their metabolism but the one I worked with ate like one DOC a day so I'm real confused. Never trained a tiny raptor before

It probably varies from bird to bird, maybe try both and see how his weight does?

That was my plan however I can't just keep trying things because of how little they actually way. I will use beef and hope it gets him eating well perhaps twice a day

Sounds good to me! I mean, you can always cut back food and he'll lose weight. If he gets too skinny it might be really hard to put weight back on, so feeding him more I think is a good plan!

The actual cutting of the weight is what I'm scared of. Thats why I wanted hand reared or crèche reared. He should eat on the fist very easy compared to a wilder bird. I know smaller raptors are much easier to kill!
