Talking Hi all, Got a new baby in the house!! :)

Hi all, have not been on in awhile. Kermit is doing fine, but he has taken up to my husband and refuses to let me touch him. I can talk to him but for some reason my husband is his chosen someone. lol, He is a mess. I decided to go ahead and adopt a new baby. His name is bullet. He is a blue indian ringneck parakeet. He is a mess. My good friend that gave me kermit asked me a week ago if I wanted an IRN as she had 2 babies that needed homes still. A silver baby and a blue baby. So I went with the blue one. He is 5 months old and in the "bluffing" stages right now, so yes my hands are black and blue once again. Kermit no longer bites, not even me, but he does prefer my husband if he is around. Our bullet is just attacking anyone and anything that gets close to him/her. It is ok though, we are being patient, and since we are doing well with our other birds we were very excited to take on another baby. I have been gone awhile since I had to have emergency surgery to have my gall bladder removed and my dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer as well. So been a rough few months. Hope everyone is doing well, enjoy the photos.

You should check out the YouTube videos of Bowie. It will inspire you for IRN training.

Beautiful baby!

Hey bird boy, how do you tell that the head is more round than cube? I am calling it a he for now, bullet is only 5 months old, so I am not real sure. I know I am being tested with this baby though. My hands have never hurt so bad from the bluffing stage, bullet has made me bleed in several spots. Although kermit bruised my hands, I never bled with my GCC. So trying my best to be super patient with bullet. But we have only had him a week today. So I know it is going to take a lot of patience and training on my part. We are very thankful we got him though, he is so beautiful. I have seen the bowie videos, Bowie is adorable. I play them for bullet and he perks up and listens to it. Everyone keeps talking about how loud IRN's are but my baby is not loud at all, even with other birds in the house. Bullet chirps quietly and isn't loud at all, there were a few times I heard a few mildly loud calls, but they are not as loud as kermit and his noisiness being a GCC. Things have been rough, so far my dad is in remission, I lost my mom to breast cancer 3 years ago. So finding out dad had cancer was like running into a brick wall all over again. But thankfully he is doing well. The other birds are doing awesome and a mess as usual. I am the one taking the most time though with my IRN. I home school during the day so bullet gets out for an hour in the AM before schooling, 45 minutes during lunch for us, an hour after school is done, and 2 hours at night time. The other birds are out the same amounts, just in different rooms at the moment. If anyone has any suggestions on how to get through the bluffing stage, please let me know, would love to have some suggestions. Been researching as much as possible for the last two years. I know it will pass eventually.

Bullet is a cutie, I have an IRN just like yours. Mine is a female named Rio, she only loves me and no one else. She did do some bluffing but it passed fast. I just ignored it and did not force her to do anything, I offered her food and talked to her and let her come out of the cage by herself, she is my sweet bird.

I agree with LinnieLover, do not force her to do anything. If she is biting you when you are trying to make her step up, then don't make her step up...use treat lures, target training, etc. Every time she bites you it is not a bluff...it is a bite. A week is still a very short time, I personally would give her more time to figure you out, by just leaving her in the cage and letting her observe you feed and clean her, talking to her, if she tries to initiate contact, then go ahead and follow her lead.

...I kept writing her (but I meant him...or her....don't know yet )

Thanks guys. I have found that bullet is cage aggressive. That is when bites happen, once out of the cage, he no longer bites or lunges while sitting on my hand. And the treats seem to work to distract him from biting while getting him in and out of the cage. We don't forcefully take him in and out the cage, I just open the cage door and bullet comes out. Once I do get him on my hand, he loves sitting next to me. I have not let him on my shoulder yet,due to the fact that I am scared my ears may get bitten. Kermit is allowed everywhere now, he no longer bites even if your not his favorite person. I am sure just a week is not a long time, so most of the time I just talk to bullet while he is playing on his play stand and eating his veggies. Thanks for all the advice. Hoping to get some more photos soon.

My linnie wasn't allowed on my shoulder for the first few months either because he would get "mad" at my ear and bite it. My ringneck was almost never allowed on my shoulder because I needed to watch her, when she became overstimulated I needed to put her down or she would bite me (or my ear/neck if she was on my shoulder). I did put her on other people's shoulders, where I could watch her mood, but only for a minute at the most. Same with my shoulder, if I needed both hands for a second, i would put her up on my shoulder, but then take her down almost immediately.

Thanks guys, bullet is getting settled in more, and loves fruit and veggies, just not the birdie bread, he is a mess. Still getting bit when having to put him in the cage, but it is getting better by the day. Bullet is talking a lot more, or letting us hear his voice, lol. But still not as loud as kermit, our Green cheek conure. lol Guess I just ended up with a quiet IRN. lol Our budgie is the loudest and makes sure we know he is in the house. Love my birds and pups.
