Soon to be a bird mom again

I still don't feel comfortable having birds at my place and hopefully we will be moving from this house in the future, soon I think. I have all of my aviary birds at my grandparents and I have to visit every single day to feed the flock. None of them are tame so don't require any hands on attention. That's just a note there

I was supposed to be having Layla's (Oni) galah, Sydney, but unfortunately the person who was supposed to be fostering him for me until I can prepare is unable to have him as he hasn't got any room and as he needs to go fast I decided that it would be okay for one of Layla's good friends to have him. That's fine by me as he's going to be living it up with a lady galah friend. I'm a bit disappointed as I would have loved to have been his caregiver but sadly life has was of making things difficult for everybody

Long story short. The person who was going to foster Sydney for me felt so guilty about not being able to give me my companion parrot that he said he would part with one of his own to say sorry. I was really touched. He had taken this bird from a couple who had kept him (prepare yourselves for this) chained up in his cage. He broke a leg because of it and when he did all they did was swap the chain over to his good leg

Anyway, about him himself... I don't know much as of yet other than that he's a male white fronted Amazon parrot. You can familiarize yourself with the species here ~ http://www.avianweb.com/whitefrontedamazon.html His name is Fernando

His current owner has been looking for a mate for him for a very long time without much success. I'm hoping to continue looking for one. When we eventually move from this house I intend on putting up an aviary for him and his potential future mate. As you can imagine, from the way he's been previously treated, he is very phobic of hands. He's not 'tame' so to speak. He will however fly over to you (which is fantastic news as it gives me something to work with) while he's flying around

I'm just waiting on photos of him at the moment but I'll be sure to post them as soon as I have any

I won't be having him for a fair few months either, I forgot to add! I want to be able to save up for any vets fees and I want to be able to buy things for him before getting him home. He's in no rush whatsoever to rehome him and will bring him down whenever I'm ready

I'm very excited

Congrats! The poor thing....CHAINED to his cage?!?! What the bloody hell is wrong with people?? Thank goodness his life has taken a turn for the better.

I'm sorry Layla has to rehome Syd. Is it due to aggression?

Yup. I don't know what goes through people's minds. A lot of people think I'm cruel when I'm holding a raptor that is wearing jesses but birds of prey are designed to have some pretty darn strong legs and feet, whereas psittacines have nothing special about theirs

I can't discuss it, due to personal reasons, but Layla is going to be birdless I'm afraid. She has also stepped down as moderator

That's sad; I hope she's okay. I've been wondering where she was...I'll miss seeing her around various forums.

Daisy, I'm very happy to hear that you are going to be bird mom again.
Birds belong to your life, and I think on the long run you won't be happy without them around you.

I'm sad to read how the poor parrot was treated by his former owners.
It's often shocking to hear how people treat their animals.
In our German linnie forum a member rescued a linnie who was kept solitary in a garage only with food and water.
He also had a hurt leg because of a tight leg band, the vet fortunately could save the leg.
But now our colleague adopted him and already got a nice female for him. I think both are happy now.

Thank you! Yes I've been struggling to cope. Any time I see photos or videos of my birds I'm completely set back. I went on my YouTube channel today for the first time in 4 months. It was nice to see my birds so happy and healthy. What a poor little linnie

Congrats the poor thing but atleast now he's enjoying a better life than he had and is going to be so spoiled when you are ready to take him in.

Oh yeah he will haha. I'm going to have him tested for the nasties, which he will not like but once it's over and done with he can relax. I'm probably going to save up and get a nice new cage instead of the one he's in. I'm going to buy enough toys to last a while and still be entertaining by having enough to rotate. I'm going to stock up on bulk foods and get all of the goodies in beforehand too I have a new job, finally, so I should be able to save up for things and treat him often. Oh, and plenty of natural perches from the woods for those feet!

I've never had one but everybody says that whitefronts are very calm and easygoing so I think you are both going to be very happy with each other. Congratulations!
