questions about conures

i am back again with more questions about other parrots!! and again, i am really taking a liking to conures. of course the only way i would be able to get one is if i found one at my door, so i am really just learning things for the future

ok so after researching "what is it like to own a conure" i have read a lot about how they are really cuddly and love their people, and the only cons are the scramming and the nipping. overall they sound like the perfect little-with-a-big-personality parrot

soooo…. what is it like to own a conure? and what is the best kind (or are they all pretty similar?)

(post some pictures for me too)

It's going to depend a lot on what particular type of conure your thinking of.

Do you have one in particular your interested in?

I love my cinnamon GCC, Shelby. She is constantly making me laugh. Had her out all night for New Years! Possibly looking at a yellow sided GCC in the next few days. Most likely for a friend of mine.

I have a greater Patagonian conure so that's the largest conure out there lol.

He is a rescue so does have problems however he is noisy. And I mean noisy. He contact calls for me constantly when he hears me anywhere in the house and does not shut up till I go and look at him and give him my undivided attention.
He is a plucker due to being imprinted onto humans as he over bonds and relies far too much on needing me and only me 24/7. He is beyond messy lol. He likes to shows off by shovelling all his food out his dish and onto the floor. He can be very destructive and has chewed through thick plastic toys. He does not play nice with others which I suspect is more down to his upbringing. I can not talk to anyone within two rooms of him as he starts calling for me. This includes phones.

However he is very affectionate to me and only me. Is happy sitting on my lap/ crawling under my neck when he thinks I won't notice. He loves playing peek a boo in his blanket. He LOVES to dance at me and sing along to music. He talks at me all the time. He loves playing games with me, chasing balls etc. and he loves snuggling into a blanket on my lap and having a nap as long as his head is facing towards my face so he can periodically check I'm still there.

You'll find a big difference with the pyrrhura conures and the arantinga conures for starts. The arantinga are a lot more brash IMO. They have eat splitting high pitched screams pyrrhura are your green cheeks, maroon bellies, crimson bellies, painted, pearly etc.

I've had 5 conures of my own. 3 green cheeks, 1 black capped and a GCC x maroon bellied hybrid. They are all completely unique

So they seem like all really good birds that bond easily to you? Since the parakeets have their flock, I want a bird I can bond with that is also cuddly. A too is too big right now and conures seem like their all really love heir owners... Of course a little too much sometimes it's a shame I can't get one sooner because there is one at a shelter that I like

They can be pretty clingy yes, and head scratches are usually appreciated I had mine in pairs and could still cuddle and hang out with both birds

Aratingas, with the possible exception of the Nandays, are incredibly loud and they appear to like to hear themselves screeching so it's not a matter of just morning and evening flock calls, it's an intermittent thing all day long. They are also quite temperamental and have no problem giving you a good nip or a nasty bite quite often even though they love you.

The little pyrrhuras can be the sweetest things or little nippy demons, it all depends on how much time you devote to them because they tend to want to be on you 24/7/365 and, when they don't get it, they don't like it and let you know it.

GCCs have a lot of red on their bellies, some mutations more than others.

So it seems like the smaller ones are better

Sun and Jenday are the most notorious for screaming, can be very nippy but are also cuddly

Dusky conures are small and cuddly too, but can be loud as well. I know some who are super sweet but very loud. There are also brown-headed conures, cherry headed conures, blue crown conures, mitred conures (my personal favorite, idk y), and more.

Those are the arantinga conures. They're bigger and louder

If I understood correctly she was asking which GCC mutation had a lot of red on the belly.

I love sun conures, and green cheeks; I've owned both. My sun conure was EXTREMELY nippy, although I've been told by one person that sunnys are one of the least nippy conures. The noise didn't bother me so much but some people really can't stand sun conures' screaming. I would suggest listening to one first before bringing one home. Like all birds, each individual conure will have a slightly different personality. Overall, I think conures are great birds, I think it would be awesome if you got one.
