Why Does decreasing

Light make a bird stop laying wouldn't it make them lay? Due to it being dark like a box?

Perhaps they need a certain amount of daylight time

It has to do with the amount of daylight they're exposed to. Birds in the wild lay in a season, usually spring time, when there are long days and plenty of food. So decreasing the amount of light tricks their biological clock into thinking it's still winter or off season so they're less likely to lay
