making a bird fly?

i wasn't really sure where to put this…

when i first took bowie out, i didn't clip his wings because i thought he wasn't a great flyer. it turned out that he could fly pretty well and crashed into a wall, in which i then picked him up and gave him the normal clip that all my birds get when they first come out.

bowie has a weak foot too. recently he has been growing his feathers back. i clipped 5 on each wing and he has 1 flight on one wing and 3 on the other. i have been taking him on the floor and raising him up and down so he will flap his wings some then i make him fly about a foot up from my finger to a perch. after i do that a few times i make him fly back to the tree.

if i put him on either of the flight cages, he will just sit rather than fly the short distance to the tree. he would rather sit all day than fly to the tree with everyone else.

a while a go, he went to the vet twice a few months apart and i was happy to see that he gained a little wait, but yesterday i picked him up to clip a few nails and i found that he was quite chubby! i think his constant sitting has made him gain a noticeable amount of weight. i want him to start flying so he can get muscle rather than fat, but how can i encourage him to fly with the others?

Does he not attempt to flock with the others? Say you hold him on one side of the room would he not try to fly back to them? If he won't try and flock with those guys, you can try recall training with him

If you leave him unclipped, he will eventually learn how to fly on his own. They aren't the most graceful when they start, both my budgies definitely had their share of crashes before they figured it out, but now they're healthy and fit and fly like pros. He might be nervous to fly because he knows he can't get very far, that's what my budgie Chip experienced before his flight feathers grew back in. It's also hard to tell by looking at him, but your budgie doesn't look that overweight to me. Maybe a little, but definitely not bad and it should come off as soon as he starts flying farther and more often. Daisy's idea of teaching him recall is also great

If I hold him away from the tree, he will fly to it but other than that he will not fly for fun. Sometimes when everyone first comes out, they all are on the top on one of the flight cages. If I put Bowie there he will sit with the others. Then the others will fly to the tree and the 2 that are growing their wings will walk on the rope to the tree. Bowie will just sit on the cage and won't go anywhere or attempt to go to the tree unless I get him on a perch and make him fly or put him on the rope so he will walk to the tree. I couldn't do recall training because he has no motivation he might take millet sometimes, but never as a reward. He doesnt play with toys either. I just want him to fly with the others or at least walk around the tree. He only stays on the big tree and if I put him on the smaller one he will run over to the big one and like the others, I do not clip than after their wings grow in. I only clip when they first come out so they don't fly into anything
