Lovie/Budgie out of cage time

Since their surprise introduction last week, the budgies and Kuzco have got along pretty well. The budgies largely avoid him and he tries to be their friend, but gives up pretty quick. He is focused enough that I can work on training him out of the cage while the budgies are out. Today however, he seemed to chase them off their perch. One was sitting on one of those bird kabob log things, which is about five feet in the air, and Kuzco flew at him and kicked him off the perch. It happened again with the other budgie a short time later. I immediately put him in his cage for a few minutes as a time out because this is behavior I do not was to reinforce. However, I don't want him to associate being in his cage as "punishment." How can I discourage this behavior? In Kuzco's defense, the budgies are being super difficult and bickering a lot for dominance today, is it possible he was responding to that? This is the first time this ever happened and I want to be able to continue letting them safely spend time together.

My little birds are always at each other a little bit and they all learned to avoid each other and knows their flock hierarchy. In these videos are some of the things that's going on at times when I let them out, it's more like they're playing than harming each other

I do have problems with my senegal and my conures, they have to have their out of cage time separately, all my other birds share out of cage time together.

Ah! A fellow Fischers owner! He/she is gorgeous. I love the colouring. Those vids were hilarious. It's also reassuring. I've heard so many horror stories of species fighting with each other, it's nice to see they can bicker/ play and not die

Too funny! What is it they're eating?

And God said, "...let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the sky." And God saw that it was good.

I think you're right, Si, and they were probably just teasing or bickering. They're all out together now and are sharing toys and food great. Kuzco seems to have taken a liking to one of the budgies and has even learned to mimic his sounds. The budgies ignore him for the most part, but they all shared a bath together this morning so I'm hoping they'll warm up to him eventually

Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between a silly squabble and an act of aggression that could cause harm. Just remember that lovies don't know their own strength (I do though, they can bite HARD) so a little budgie nip may not hurt them but a lovie nip usually results in lost toes I would keep an eye on him for now. It is Spring and all of the birds are very hormonal so expect him to play up a bit
