Bribes

I have a female Eclectus that is almost 4 months old. She is hand tamed and is a real snuggle bug. I would like to start other kinds of training and I would like to use a food reward to encourage the desired behavior. Problem is, she does not want to except any food from my hand, she just lunges at it as if to ward off this evil offering. I've tried all her favorites will the same result. If I then place it in her food dish she will race right over and eat it. I'm feeling a bit bewildered as usually I get birds to take treats from me and that is how the hand taming begins. Background - I got her when she was down to just two feedings a day, then we just did a late night comfort feeding, and then she only wore the food until we both decided she was weaned. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Use a clean, empty food bowl and drop the treats in to there. Over time she will learn to stop lunging It's how I got my Amazon to take treats from me. In no way would he come near me at first and getting him to take food from the bowl was soooooo easy once he knew what it meant I wrote a little blog post about it... you can see Clyde taking food from his bowl and then another photo of him eventually taking them gently from my fingers

It's so funny that she will fall asleep with her head on my cheek but she thinks I'm trying to poison her if I offer her food in my hand. The nerve of me! When I feed her in her food bowl, she rides the bowl back into the lock position and eats on the way....but take it from my fingers, or out of my flat outstretched hand...Get OUT of here!
