Sudden Affection

I got a rescue Congo Grey 8 days ago. She is 7 years old.

I've been taking things slowly. She has bitten me multiple times (which I completely expected) she's never stepped up for me without first stepping up on a perch first and that's only with a lot of coaching and has a 50% success rate. When she's on top of her cage and I come to close she goes back inside.

Basically all the stuff you expect when you first start working with a bird.

Today when I got home from work it was business as usual, few bites etc.

About an hour before bed time I went over to her cage and she actually lowered her head like she wanted it scratched (she's NEVER even come remotely close to letting me do this) so i scratched her head and she climbed up on me and started grooming my hair. She was letting me scratch her head and touch her wing and was making the cooing baby sounds. She stepped up for me multiple times and then actually laid on her back in my hands.

I'm not complaining! But this is very strange to me. Its not my first rodeo with parrot owner ship and I expected to see a slow progression.

This was like a complete 180 in the span of 2 hours.

I'm just wondering if anyone else has ever encountered something similar?

I have never had a large bird, but it sounds like she has decided she likes you! Hopefully this is the start of a long, loving relationship

That's awesome, sounds like she decided to trust you! Parrots can be very unpredictable, not only in their aggression but in their affection as well.

I wouldn't work with her too much, you're bound to get bitten in the beginning if she hasn't had chance to settle in yet! But at least she's had a nice moment with you. Maybe when she realizes that you aren't a threat at all she will start to really love you

Awww, that is a sweet gesture from from her. That is a quick turnaround and of course it may be short lived. LOL

Nome of mine are rescues, so I can't relate. But even with my weaned fabies, some have come around quickly and others took up to a yr to completely accept me.
