sea grass mats?

Hi all! I put a sea grass mat on the floor of my tiels cage and have a swing/hammock toy made of sea grass. Henry was sleeping in the swing/hammock at night, but now he's chewing and destroying both, shredding and may be eating the sea grass. I'm not positive he's eating it, but both my husband and I have thought we saw him actually eating it. Anyway, I took both things out of the cage and need to know if eating sea grass is harmful to him? Thanks all!

As long as it it not salty it should be no problem.
To make sure I'm afraid you'll have to taste it.

I think it would depend on where it was made and what it's original purpose was. Does it have some kind of finish to make it shiny or waterproof, like for a dinner table? If it's plain, natural, and not coated with anything...then maybe it would be ok.

I got it from My Safe Bird Store just for birds. The thing I'm afraid of is its like very coarse, hard straw and if he's eating it, I'm afraid he'll impart his crop or just get sick.

Never say never, but it's very unprobable.
I've bee offering grass mats for chewing for two years now, and there has never been any problem.

sea grass

I ordered one for Bennie and hung some toys on it. I hung the whole thing from the curtain rod behind his cage. He really seems to enjoy it and has shredded some of it, but doesn't really seem to eat it.

Thanks Karin!

Thanks Jana! That's the same mat I have in your picture. I'll give it back to him. He misses chewing it. I'll just keep a close eye on him that yes not actually eating it.

Ah...I see. I had the wrong idea of what you meant. I thought you meant something like a placemat.

We have the same sea grass mat, and our boys chew on it all the time. I just ordered a new one for them because the old one is starting to fall apart.

You new guys are so cute!

They are good boys! Even one of the girls is starting to check out the mat! Until one of those "good" boys chases her away!
