cockatiel and sun conure?

I just saw an ad and picture in the paper of someone wanting to re-home a sun conure. I had been thinking of getting another cockatiel as a companion for Bennie. Would a conure, housed in a separate cage, in the same room, be an okay companion? Do they have to interact to be companions? I don't think I'd ever want them to be together without a cage between them, wouldn't they fight? The conure has a much heavier beak...I am afraid he'd seriously hurt Bennie. but, could they be friends?

i would not let them out together or near each other with out you right there but they can talk to each other and keep each other company even in different cages i have one tiel and will be getting a grey and a irn which will not be with my tiel but they can still talk to each other sometimes two tiels don't get along either. and i have seen some tiels and suns get along but be careful suns can do a lot of damage so stay right with them when near each other

First question to ask is why they are rehoming the Sun, as a lot of these are rehomed due to screaming. Not that could be a problem at your place and with another bird around. Tiel and Suns together? well yes it can work, but err on the side of caution. Suns, even loving ones can do damage. And it will be the Tiel that comes off second best. Protect the tops of cages as feet will get chewed.
I have seen Poppy go up against Dexter beak to beak. Poppy was left to live with my Tiels, Budgie and Dexter. For two months all was good. Then, and I am picking it was her, Budgie Blue suffered beak damage.
I run mixed flock and have to watch what is going on and the body language of each bird. I never see this coming.
I am not so sure it will be company for your Tiel. Like Lisa has said two Tiels do not always get on either.
Whatever you do have plan 'B'.

A tribute to my lost ones. RIP.

sun conure

The ad said they are getting a divorce. I have not talked to the owners at all, just saw the ad and the picture. It looks like a very nice cage, like the bird was well cared for, and he had plenty of toys. Maybe the couple couldn't decide who should take "Peanut" so they said neither of them would.
I honestly am leaning towards not taking the conure; I have a very small one-room studio apartment. I think what might work better for my situation is to get a larger cage and a 2nd cockatiel. But then I guess there's always the possibility the 2 'tiels won't get along.

I do hope this Sun ends up in a good home. I feel a Sun Conure would be a bird that suits a single bird home with lots of attention. They are only one step down from a Rainbow Lorikeet. I know this thing down my shirt is happy with her chosen human. And not good at socialising with the other guys.
But it sounds like you may not have the room to keep the birds apart.
At least you are researching before making any decisions.

cockatiel and sun conure

Well, my problem is solved; the sun conure is gone. I did call about him to ask some questions and see if it might work out for me to get him, but he was already re-homed. I just hope they got him a good owner.
