Mango Beak

Last night I decided to make my Mango Chilli Chicken for dinner as Mango's are now in season and are coming down in price. So after I had cut most of the flesh of the mango I gave the seed to my 15 month old Alexandrines. This is the first time they have had one as I didn't make this dish last year (don't know why it was lovely). They weren't too sure at first and Yeti had a nibble at it. I walked past later on and both Yeti and Yowie had Mango Beaks. It was all over them and they were really enjoying it. They had already figured out how to break it open to get at the seeds inside the main shell (people think that the inside is the seed but it's not there are seeds inside that it is only a seed shell) and they were enjoying the seeds inside. This morning they are still enjoying chewing on the husk. I just may have to go to the big fruit shop nearby that gets huge amounts of Mango's in each season and buy a box of them. I can often buy a whole box of them for $5 as they are getting very ripe and won't keep very long, the Alex's seem to prefer them very very ripe. I can cut the cheeks of the mango and then freeze them, so the Alex's and the Toos can have a real feast.

Aww, too cute! The birds can have the seeds inside? Our birds at the shop enjoy mango but we've always taken out the center! That'll be a fun treat for the big macaws!

I have been giving them to them for years and never lost a bird yet. Mind you they don't get a huge amount of them. Maybe 3 or 4 a season maximum. Unless they are on special or there is a glut of them I can't afford to buy that many. They are only really cheap here in around the month before Christmas and a bit after. That is usually when I get them. But the really do enjoy eating and chewing on the husk and playing with it.
