Red face I need help choosing the right species for me!

Hi there,

I'm new to the forums and you can call me Ana I know this is a common topic, but I really do need help! I have grown up with lovebirds, taken care of a Galah (Rose-breasted Cockatoo) for a friend for a couple of months, and am constantly around my boyfriends female Congo African Grey. I have a German Shepherd and I love her to death and am capable of taking care of difficult, demanding pets. I love birds and would like a new friend

I have slept in my whole life and think its time for a change and I would like a natural alarm clock ;P , so the waking up early will not bother me. I am thinking to either go small and simple or go all out and get an amazing medium-large size bird.

-I am particular to a cuddly bird, but not an absolute must (if I find I like a Grey or something..)
-noise is not exactly an issue, but I don't think I can tolerate a bird known for screaming
-should be able to tolerate the female grey, don't want any huge feuds. they don't need to be on same perch or anything. is it that two females cant get along or female/male grey...?
-would be wonderful if he/she could learn to talk, but is also not a must
-I would love a funny parrot, a "ham"
-jealousy wouldn't be good, I am in a committed relationship and Max and his parrot aren't going anywhere

Thoughts so far:

Small-
Cockatiel, GCC
Medium-
Poicephalus Parrots, Pionus
Med/Large-
Blue-fronted Amazon, Timneh AG over congo (personally I like the look better)

Suggestions are what I'm looking for if I missed something and please enlighten me!

Well I can't say exactly which bird is the perfect bird for you, only you can know that , I can however tell you what I think about some of the birds as I have a few of those.

Cockatiels are wonderful small birds, most love to be held and kissed and are very cuddly, a few learn to talk, but most don't. They are also very playful.

GCC are little clowns, playful and cuddly, I think they can learn to talk, but can't recall anybody actually saying there's does.

Galah's can scream like crazy and when they want something, no is not an answer. They are very needed and cuddly and loving and very ocd .

I can't say about TAG's but I have a CAG and she is sooo wonderful, she can talk like you wouldn't believe, She can give Einstein a run for her money, lol. She is mega playful, loves to cuddle and kiss and talks all day long.

I hope this is of some help to you and welcome to the forum

I wouldn't go for the Amazon personally. Almost every zon I have come across has been very boisterous and might be just too over the top for your grey.

I think pionus are great (I would love a bronze winged!) they're so underrated. I think they're beautiful and so relaxed that they can fit into most peoples lifestyles

If you like the poi family (the Africans such as Senegals, Jardines and Meyers etc) then have a look into Cape parrots. They are expensive but they're supposed to be really lovely birds. They're about as large as a grey, playful but relaxed and like some cuddling.

Another suggestion would be a Hahn's macaw. They're like a big macaw in a large conure sized package. They're sweet and cuddly but have a fun outlook on everything. They can also talk really well.

I know I haven't gone in to much detail but I hope they help also, welcome to the forum!

A few people on here have green cheeks that talk Shannon hehe I know JoAnnes does.

I'm sorry I completely went past the tiels and conures bit. And I can't merge the posts on my phone for whatever reason.

I love cockatiels. They're relaxed, steady and very forgiving. All of mine talk but I think it is only because one of them did, so they all learnt from him (do you know how irritating six cockatiels shouting Joey is?!?). I have found cockatiels to be probably the least active of all of my birds. They like to sit down and sleep a lot! Mine do anyways. They can however be loud. I think one of my cockatiels Joey, is the loudest bird I actually have. He's persistent too. I would go with a female if you wanted to avoid screaming.

Don't get me wrong, I love my green cheek to bits BUT my maroon bellied x green cheek hybrid is far nicer as a 'pet'. Green cheeks are sassy with an attitude. Very cute and cuddly when they want to be! And extremely playful, and cheeky ! But if you want a more mellow bird I would go with a maroon bellied conure or other pyhurra conures. Crimson bellied, black capped, pearly are all lovely birds. Look into as many as you can.

The key to choosing a bird is finding a bird who choses you. Go visit some!

Lol, thanks Daisy, I was drawing a complete blank on that, for the life of me I couldn't remember if anybodies talked . I only have one tiel that talks, Fyte, he just learned to say I love you. My teils and my cockatoo are my most active birds, my Mom's are even more active, lol.

And of course too it will depend on what's available in your area too, like Daisy said visit some see what you click with

Thanks for the responses! Shannon how old is your grey and can you tell me more about her personality? My boyfriends grey does not like to be touched much except for the head when she wants it and she is still under 6 months. I hear its kinda rare for her to be that independent so young, but I'm not really sure.

And Daisy is the marooned bellied conure the same as the crimson bellied conure? probably just a matter of color and opinion, but just making sure. Do you both know of bigger conures that would be a good fit?

My boyfriend is probably wanting me to get a grey, but I would love a bird that was cuddly and funny... but I guess some greys are cuddly.. so difficult!

And we have frequented this bird store quite often, and we know the owner pretty well so I would be able to get a baby bird of my choosing.

AHH! -.-

Maroon bellied look almost like a green cheek while crimson bellied are much more flashy! Larger conures? Like aratinga conures? I also realise I spelt pyrrhura wrong in my last post

Blue fronted conures are probably my fave for personality. Have you seen the movie Paulie? There's also Nanday, mitred, cherry headed, dusky, jenday, sun, peach front and many more the problem with that family are noise. Most people will say they're lovely gentle sweet birds but they can be so loud!

I'd be happy too, Pepper my grey is 11 months old. The place I got her from is where I've been buying birds for 15-20 years, so I know them really well. So a couple days after I bought my galah, I got an email about a grey that had that wasn't for sale to the general public, she had been one of there handfed babies and the person had returned her. Well, anyway when I got her she was afraid of hands, I'm sure someone had hit her at least once, were over all that though. She loves to grumble at me which I love, she also likes to play hard to get, but as soon as I ignore her here she comes running to me, like hello did you forget someone. If she's sitting on my shoulder she'll reach over and nip my ear or my nose or kiss me. She loves to snuggle under my chin while I rub her head and she loves her head kissed too. I also just scoop her up in my hand and she just lay's in my hand while I rub her. She has quite a vocab too and you never know what she going to say, one minute she's barking like a dog and the nexts she saying "here I go" or "Oh pepper, pepper, pepper, pepper" or when she's calling me she calls me "here sui, sui, sui", or "oh hello" thats as few of the things she says. She love to be out but can also play independently in her cage with her toys. And she loves to talk to my rabbits too, but gets so upset when they don't say hello back .

I have in the past had a too,
I found her cuddly and sweet but at the same time loud demanding and unpredictable.
I would trawl through some of the older posts to find out about general personalities.
I have an IRN now and while he's hilarious, he isn't a cuddler but he does talk well.
Is there any birds you prefer to narrow it down?
