Update on everything

Hey everybody, I haven't been so active recently when it comes to posting my own stuff but I wanted to go for it anyways being as I have so much to update on really

Firstly, some bad news. My 17 year old border collie, Shep, passed away not too long ago. He'd gone so thin so quick, it was unbelievable. Got him to the vets and they said except for it being his time, he was in fantastic condition himself. They said they've never seen a dog at that age so happy and healthy. But yeah, me and Jack went outside and Shep kept staring at the floor. He was almost completely blind so he would look around oddly anyways but I sat with him making sure he was okay. He then collapsed. I helped him up, thinking it would be okay, he could of just slipped. But he didn't. His legs just started to go beneath him. We couldn't get an emergency vet to come out to us and it hurt knowing how he was. I nearly ended up having an enormous fight with the family about it because I demanded we had to take him somewhere. Instead, I had to take him first thing in the morning. I barely slept a wink. Me and that dog had grown up together, we were the same age. I couldn't even begin to imagine my life without him but I knew the kindest thing to do would be to have him put down. I told the vets that at his age, I don't think there is a lot we could do. They agreed and shortly after he was put down. I cried my self sick. I have not had a fantastic year what so ever when it comes to the animals. Especially with Echo and the cockatiels. I'd lost 2 finches too earlier in the year, one due to age and the other had egg complications, my quails due to our horrific weather (I have 2 left) and both Iris and Sqwibble, two of my budgies recently passed away also. This is not due to the same thing as the other birds who passed away. Vets said that Iris was having some egg complications where she wasn't producing well, she was a constant layer too no matter how much I tried to control it. I was also told that Sqwibble looked pretty old herself, and she may have passed due to only consuming seeds before she came to us. Both birds never truly looked right and it is certainly the last I buy from any people I don't really trust

Now for some better news! I found a fantastic avian vet who is actually in my reach. He now treats all of my birds and has fallen in love with my big boy Chalkie. He was a falconer himself and keeps a blue and gold macaw. What more could I want? He recently did Chalkie's beak and talons for me, and has done some disease testing. I am SO glad I'm at ease now I don't have to use a general vet. The last one treated me like dirt!

I have added to my flock also, which I didn't feel up to posting about before but I feel like sharing now I currently have a cockatiel in quarrantine. I'm unsure of the sex though. Supposedly a 'she' but I'll keep an eye on that. When she is out of quarrantine she will go into a cage with Harvey. I have also had 3 new budgies, all named after their mutations. Violet, Ray (short for Rainbow), Sky and Snow. Snow was a store bought bird who I fell in love with and the other 3 are some of Amelia's (CaptainHowdy) babies. They're some of the only birds I can say that have come to me in fantastic condition! I have a flock of zebra finches now, rather than just the odd one or two I don't have many but I have more than before haha, they're all virtually identical minus the fawn birds. On top of those lovely girls and boys, I've also got a new pair of parrotlets. Now I have more room I can happily say I'm good to go with parrotlets again. The last breeding pair I had were sadly rehomed, but they wen't to a lovely man and his family so I'm happy about that. They weren't that happy here and grandad wasn't happy about the birds I had at the time but since I've started moving everything around I've made a lot more room. But yeah, I have a new breeding pair of celestial parrotlets. They're American white The man I got them from needed to sell them fast, as he never intended on buying them in the first place. A guy blackmailed him telling him if he didn't buy them then he was going to pull their necks cannot express how glad I am that they're safe and sound here. I've named them Sierra & Mist (I posted about it on twitter and they actually got in touch with me to say thanks )

I have bought another 'house' bird though, all of my others will be in the new aviaries we're putting up... except this guy. He's a black capped lory. Not a species you get to see often. He's like a puppy, constantly on the go! I will post photos of him soon for you all (as well as all of the others). I actually got him (and the cockatiel) from the National Exhibition. It's where I got Pickles from last year. He lives cage free almost all of the day and then he gets to sleep in an aviary (or if I'm busy he goes in) with plenty of toys and foraging opportunies. You cannot sell hand raised birds from there, and I don't actually believe he is. But he sure acts like it! I believe it is down to the lories natural need to be curious and playful

Other good news is that due to my anxiety disorder and various other problems, I have finally been able to work from home. I left my animal management course earlier in the year and from then on everything went down hill with my mental well being. But now, I'm still getting my qualifications. I currently do animal management again for the first course, but I also took two courses, so after that I do a more advanced course in animal behaviour. I'll then be going on to a higher level (4) in animal welfare shortly after

I managed to get a new camera too! I love my Nikon D60, but it is a little outdated compared to all you folks with your lovely Canons. So I got the Canon Rebel t3i, I've got my 18-55 lens and my 75-300 lens I still use my other camera just as much but honestly the difference between the two is crazy!

ALSO!!! It's my birthday on the 29th (9 days!), and because I'm bland compared to most girls my age, I'm spending my 18th walking around the International Centre for Birds of Prey with Jack then in just over three weeks I'm off to Tenerife for a week to visit Loro Parque just me and Jack. I have barely left the house these past few months, I was hoping I'd be a bit more sorted out by now but I'm really trying to think of the positives rather than the negatives

So yeah, that is all. Hope everybody else is okay and I hope to see people more active over here

EDIT: I also forgot to mention, I now own one of Dexter's younger siblings

I'm happy that things are going better for you Tell me about it. This year my sister killed our linnie, our mealy amazon died, our chickens and ducks got taken by a fox, my last budgie escaped, and our dog has gone missing in Cornwall! It's a tough life, eh.

Glad things seem to be looking up for you now Daisy.

I can relate very much with your losing Shep. I am going through a very similar situation right now. My old boy, Tramp, is not doing so good. He will be 14 in April but I was really worried about him last week. It appears as if he may have had a stroke. He was already partly blind and deaf but after last week it looks as if his eyesight has completely gone. He was very wobbly on his back legs and just wasn't acting right. He is still eating well but has problems finding his food so I am now hand feeding him his meat log. And he seems to be occassionally getting lost, goes out to get a drink of water and takes a wrong turn on the way back into the lounge and ending up in the sunroom. I have to go and retreive him and carry him back into the lounge. He seems to be getting tired very easily just by going out to get a drink in the kitchen. I know it is only a matter of time and I am dreading the time it happens.
But he has improved over this weekend and is getting around alot better than at the end of last week, so maybe he will be with me for a bit longer yet.

He has been with me since he was born. As was his father, and his fathers parents had been with me from the time they were little puppies. I will not be alone after he goes though as I still have his son and daughter.

I'm glad to see a happy Daisy back.
The best thing about Tenerife is that you can be on your own or make friends.
Dont use any short cuts and stick to main routes.
we had a very unpleasnt encounter taking a short cut to our hotel.
we were in a dodgy area though.
If you stick to the bars the older people go to there's some great comedians and singers.
we found a good funny Elvis impersonator who had us in stitches!
I'd love to see loro park again it's awesome.
And visit the volcano again and pretend we're on the set of the original Startrek series.
I see you're expanding that flock again. I'm a bit as they say well Jel!
But then again Bob is enough bird all by himself!
