My Boy 'Mo'

I acquired 'Mo' Pink and Grey Galah ,from a wildlife park. He came from a deceased estate. Stunted growth ,Bulldog beak, flat feet. A bird with an extreme personality, absolutely lovable, but after 1 week, he hated me. I've persevered, He loves ladies and melts like butter in their hands. Early in the week , he developed a wheezy crackly breathing[ He's always had the pumping tailfeathers] I put it down to his previous owners smoking. or poor ventilation or 'who knows'..I took him to the vet yesterday and we ran through the possibilities.,-Psitta virus , best discounted, because of 2 other birds, not showing symptoms. possible mould virus.. Cut a long story short , Mo is taking the antibiotic Psitta, to conquer most other viruses, that might be [same drug as introduced birds take in Australian Quarentine, for 35 days.. Anyway, now Mo hates me for taking him to the vet!-[It was very traumatic] he will purposely go to sleep, to avoid me talking to him .. Perseverence, I fed all the birds weeds today and he started to show response,,This afternoon 'Nutrifeed pellets' did the trick.. He went into his 'despicable me' mental state, then snapped back out as a friendly boy. Another attribute is , his wheeziness is all but gone..STRANGE? no, Im a 20 year veteran of birds. I Inherited a 55y/o Cockatoo [I prepared him for his future before his previous owner died{{ for 4 years}}.. Nothing is strange if you own a bird.. but can I stress, take time out and watch your bird for a while, If your bird is sick, get it to the vet, straight away.. bird sickness escalates very quickly!

Appears Im on the 'outer' . Woke them all up this morning and Mo wont speak to me.. I purchased corn and bean shoots-still didn't win me points..Anne my neighbour snapped him from his 'morbid' state, by talking to him and I think my singing along to 70-80's music 'spurred' him a little[ Im such a good singer] -not!!!- anyway, some wheeziness this morning, He is eating and drinking like a highly paid business man- Lets look foreward to tomorrow!

He sounds just like any other red blooded Aussie bloke to me.

Seriously though, is he responding to the antibiotics to clear up his wheeze?

Cheers,

John.

I'm not going to say we are out of the woods, but things are looking good.. Thanks to a 4 y/o young lady, that kept Mo and Cocky entertained for more than an hour yesterday, then today, a good afternoon of sun and a visit from 2 ladies, with lots of kisses and love [for Mo, 'not me']..Then a good feed of corn all around and everybody is set for bed...Always a worry , but these birds never fail to amaze me.. A wayward Kookaburra really upset the camp yesterday..

I don't know if you are referring to dry or fresh corn but, if it's dry, be VERY VERY careful with it, dry corn is one of the most common carriers of aspergillus with the corresponding aflatoxin danger.

I suggest an oxygen enclosure for his wheezing. It works wonders in birds with damaged lungs...

Corn , cut straight from the cob, Bibi,, They love it and will recycle the skins for more later!.. Mo spent a great afternoon , watching the wilds , in the sun.. I added more powder to the drink water tonight and freshened it. Mo is appearing to make good advancement , but thanks for the tips!

It's good he's getting better! You could use a nebuliser if you can get hold of one? You can use F10 in it, the concentrated version (be careful which you buy because both are different things), and it works very well

Here we are 5 months down the track and Mo is a total machine.. He is so cute and excitable, He competes with 'Cocky' for whistling status, but loves me whistling when the garage door closes.. He loves to see neighbors walking about , loves the posties bike and loves 'Harley Davidson ' rev sounds -he goes ballistic.. [ next d neighbour has 1.. He's just started chewing pumpkin bread and grain bread.. He emits his feremones to say he loves me... His girlfriend is not impressed that he doesn't know what an 'upper class' lady galah is!.. All going good from here.. still massive tail pumping.. but he's cruising!

He has so much love- Jill.. In years gone by , obviously I have noted things ,that he was outside of a cage & 1 on 1 with his[ from the words he says], Mother [ her son obviously had a Harley Davidson ] and her grandchildren visited often... She had Athsma -or smoked, but checked on Mo very often!. But now loves his ... Carer!- Me.. I don't know his previous owner, but this is what I have 'diagnosed'...Within seconds of putting my face against his cage, he waddles across' smoothly' and monsterous kisses are exchanged-- Its great!
