poor russel I woke up this morning and he was so sick. He was puffed up and his wings were drooped and i freaked out and sat with him and he was just really cuddley, so I called the vet its an hour away, I had to work but my dad took him cause he has to go that way for work, so it turns out he has a crop infection and I dont understand how he got it im very careful about cleaning his water and veggies and wiping down his cage, and cleaning i just feel bad. He has to stay with my dad at work today so I guess the vet prescribed baytril and a powder, and he said feed him more veggies then pellets right now so he doesnt get blocked, what do you guys think I should give him right now then? He eats basically all veggies he had some kale, apple and tomato this morning before he left. im so worried about him im moving him to my room instead of my bird room so i can keep a close eye on him

I'm so sorry about russel. I hope he recovers quickly. When you put fresh veggies and foods in his cage how long do you leave it? It could be that it was left a little too long and set up bacteria. Even as diligent as you can be, sometimes it just happens. There are lots of reasons he could have gotten a crop infection, another bird pooping in his food, him playing on the bottom of the cage, lots of reasons. Its not you're fault. I'm sure you've dong an excellent job with him especially as fast as you noticed him being sick and getting him to the vet. Kudos to you for catching it as fast as you did! You could also give him oatmeal and yogurt if he'll eat it. Just try to find soft mushy stuff that he will eat.

Could have been old pellets or seed too. I once walked into Petco and looked at the seed and they had bags and bags of molded seed in the shelves! I couldn't believe it. By the time I was finished the bags were in the middle of the floor for them to dispose of and I let the manager know as I left the store. You have to look over pellets and seed really well. There really is just no telling how he got the infection and you shouldn't beat yourself up over it. It sounds like you give him the best care possible. The baytril should work well though. Did they give him Pro-biocin? You need to make sure to give him pro-biotics while on the baytril. The antibiotics can kill all the good flora in his intestines and then you will have a whole new set of problems. Antibiotics should ALWAYS come with pro-biotics!

i get my pellets from petsmart and I buy any seed from the health store or parrotdise perch online and i know some pet stores can be disgusting. Where do I get probiotic what is it called?

Its called probiocin. Call your vet and tell him that you need it since Russell is on antibiotics. He should let you have it. I think it cost me around 25.00 when I had to have it for my B&G. He had a bacterial infection and was on baytril & probiotics. It got rid of the infection. The probiocin is in a tube and you keep it in the refrigerator. Its a white paste and you squirt it down their throat once a day. Make sure first what the white powder is. It may be some other kind of probiotic.

and thanks for the support guys I know Russ appreciates it to

So Russ seems to be getting better he enjoys being in my room but I think he misses seeing the other birds. :( I've been giving him lightly boiled veggies and putting a few of his pellets in hot water to soak before he eats them so its not as heavy in his tummy, I have to hand feed him three times a day which he loves hes always so sad when I finish lol, and he takes the baytril well hes still a bit puffy but overall Im happy with the process. He really wanted a bath today so I let him then I blowdried him cause I didnt want him sitting wet in his cage. i think when the meds are done Ill take him back to the vets just to make sure its completely gone. I cant wait till hes healthy

Ohh and Delilah,s doing well she seems to get along well with the tiels and budgies her wings are still clipped so Im excited for her to be able to fly in a few months, all the budgies are doing well they just moulted a few weeks ago, the cockatiels are happy too they like the noise my cute little Lineolated makes -- that reminds me she now says step up and whatcha doin? Lmbo :biggrin5:

im really excited cause I just got my license and Im getting my car next month its gonna be really tight for a month but after I get my car I plan to start applying to different zoo's and the wild bird kingdom.
