good thoughts for munch

well... yesterday she was quiet and napping lots. she refused to come out of her sleeping tube. she was in with mango and she kept nodding off... generally didnt look well. shortly after that she started passing bloody droppings and had very yellow urine and urates. she also stopped eating and drinking.

it was late and there were no vets open. i didnt think she would make the night. but we put a heat lamp on her cage, and following the advice from someone we syringe fed her apple cider vinegar, garlic powder, and celery seeds... all 3 good for the kidneys as they were shutting down. and celery seeds for pain.

got 1/2 a mL in her and she vomited it up. it was all yeast. big chunks of yeast. at this point she had no feces in her droppings, just yellow urates and urine with tinges of blood. but each time she vomited up the yeast less and less blood was noticed until she had it no more. after that she drank a table spoons worth of water. i took that as a good sign. but she still wasnt eating.

got her seen this morning. she ended up having such a bad yeast infection that it built up and caused a partial obstruction in her crop and she wasnt getting enough nutrients and it was in turn shutting her kidneys down. they said to continue with the apple cider vinegar mix since it was helping with both the yeast and her kidneys.

shes eaten this morning and has passed very dark blood free feces and her urates and urine are clearing up!

apparently the diet change caused stress that brought this hidden problem out in the open. they said she had this problem for a VERY long time. and we had photos of her old droppings for comparison for them to see and they even said it was evident through the droppings that there was something going on. now theyre improving. shes had those droppings since we got her. meaning shes had the yeast infection since she was a baby.

she also had some rancid sunflower seeds in her crop, which werent being digested right from the yeast... causing more problems. but the outcome is looking good!

shes on the road to recovery now, so fingers crossed for her! shes brighter eyed this morning and ten times more active!

pardon some of the images...
when i first noticed a problem

her bad droppings

the yeast in her vomit

sunflower seed

but she looked horrible last night... and loyal mango refused to leave her side for nothing. its not contagious however.
you know shes bad when she lets you give scritches and mango wont fly away

but! today after everything, shes looking much better! brighter eyed, pooping, eating! droppings still arent good, but theyre a huge improvement from yesterday

so please keep munch in your thoughts... i feel horrible as i didnt notice until it was almost too late.

im hoping she pulls through... shes doing so much better already but shes not completely better. shes in with mango as he seems to keep her hanging on.
theyre both playing right now with his coconut toy

if she pulls through this, im caging them together. he stuck by her the whole time and shes been really wanting to stay with him...

Aww so sorry that you baby is ill... but it is soo heartwarming to see the devotion a pet can give another pet... they do love even if some people do not see that. I hope she has a quick and full recovery.

Awwww, poor Munch

It's amazing, just goes to show you how well birds can hide these things, even if you know what to look for! And so many people don't have a clue, because the info out there is not the easiest to find sometimes.

Will send good thoughts her way!

I am praying for Munch. I know it is easy to blame yourself, but you couldn't have known what was going on, especially since she has had this since she was so young. You have done all you could to help her.
In those pictures Mango looks very concerned. What a sweet boy he is, too.

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

mango wont leave her much. today in the cage they did some things separately but when she was really bad he refused to leave her. he's very loyal to her. thats why im deciding to cage them together, despite the odd squabble. i think they need eachother too much. mango is one of the few things that kept her going. she needs him.

got some recent photo updates

and last night with mango... he refused to leave, even though he usually flies away from my hand

as for them hiding things.... VERY well! it was literally a subtle chalkiness to her droppings this whole time. they never changed and she didnt show other symptoms so we just assumed they were from her pickiness with eating... which now i wonder WHY shes picky... she wasnt well. but shes a good weight, not underweight, so she was getting enough nutrients, but not enough at the same time. the obstruction is a recent development, the yeast is not.

so any owners out there who dont know this, ANY slight issue, even if it appears to be nothing, get them seen! it could end badly.

Poor Munch... in a way, it's a good thing you changed her diet and tried to force her... it brought her condition out in the open so you could catch it and treat it in time. Darling Mango, he really loves his sister... Sending healing thoughts Munch's way. Keep us updated on how she's doing. Does the vet have her on any medication to kill off the yeast?

no, he said the cider vinegar is doing the job. he said to monitor it and if it gets worse again or if there's no improvement in a week to go back in for meds. it does seem to be working... her droppings are getting better and better, shes eating and drinking again, shes running around the cage, and even playing a bit.

and mango is a big sweetheart when it comes to his sister. he just makes me smile. ive never seen 2 birds so bonded but not be a mating pair. mango still likes his perch better... LOL

will give updates again tomorrow

I guess this explains why she was gaining weight, eating less but some, and having dark pooh. She is so fortunate that you pay such close attention to her. Believe me, I know what my bird's normal pooh looks like, but I don't keep pictures to show the vet in case of an emergency.
My vet is always impressed that I can bring Stanley and Elisa in the same carrier and yet tell her whose pooh is whose. Seriously, she's never had a linnie or she'd know why I can easily tell the difference.

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

as for the diet change bringing it out, yes i am very glad we caught it now. any longer im not sure she'd be with us.

lots of poops this morning, still dark, but theyre not bad like the first ones. consistency is a good thing, even if the droppings arent normal yet. consistency means shes recovering

shes running around the cage chirping like crazy. the 2 of them knocked a food dish off the side of the cage...

she ate like a pig this morning. still a little fluffy but shes eating a lot. fighting me over the vinegar mix and the yogurt (probiotics to keep the good bacteria in her as the cider vinegar tends to get rid of all bacteria) but shes getting some in her lol shes such a brat. then she escaped and went after the tiels.... some things never change
she also was beating up a few toys and bickering with mango over the spiral perch... then they settled and cuddled together.

she got a little rough this afternoon, nappy and a nasty dropping but then suddenly started showing better signs... gave us a good scare this afternoon... but shes doing even better. HATES the vinegar mix with a passion!

she started leaning

her urine went dark green

she was like that for the whole day until this evening...
she passed a way better dropping after that one (theres a few hours between each dropping) (new good one on the left, bad one on the right for comparison)

then she perked up and started eating and playing

not too happy after her treatment LOL
