HARLEY Goes to the VET

Harley and I went to my avian vet today. He was a bit afraid of the doctor, kept wanting to get back to me (bonding already, sweet!) but the exam went well, and the doctor says he's perfect! YIPEE! The form I fill out (with a new bird) asks at least 75 questions, from his playing habits, eating, sleeping, talking, pooping, to his cage size, sleeping time, where his cage is, other pets in the house, and on and on. It's good really, and gives him a snapshot of the bird's life. I'd sure never remember to tell him all that stuff, so it's good he asks.

He also thinks Harley is a "he" and says the guy (breeder) who works part time at my bird shop, really knows his stuff and is usually right on the bird's sex.

Harley is eating ZuPreem Naturals. I asked the vet about that, and he said that his top two favorites are Roudybush and Harrison's, equally, and then ZuPreem would be third. He said it's "okay". I told him I think I'll eventually (after he settles in) try to switch him to Roudybush and he said that would be great and to take it slowly. He also said that since all the birds are eating pellets, in addition to fruit, veggies, birdy bread, etc., that no vitamins or minerals should or need to be added.

I really like this vet. He spends a lot of time with my birds and takes time to answer all my questions. The visit today was free, provided by my bird store (nice benefit). I asked the receptionist what this type of "new bird" visit normally costs, and she said $40 -- not bad at all I think! He got weighed, the doctor felt him all over, listened to his heart, looked in his mouth with a light, checked his eyes, beak, ears and did lab tests on his poop, plus answering all my questions. Not bad, right? Also, when I do have to pay, I get a 10% senior discount, just like I get at my dogs' vet. I'll take it!

Harley talked and chirped, while hanging upside down in his travel cage, all the way there and back home! What a bird! Oh yes, he says "step up" now -- mostly "UP" -- but he says it. Tomorrow will be a week that he's been home, so he's a fast learner!

He didn't seem at all traumatized when we got home, just went back to playing and chirping, so all in all, a great day!

Glad to hear he is in good health. He sounds like he is settling in quite nicely. Are you ever going to introduce him to Libby?

Thanks!

Bob - Yes, I plan to let them see each other soon. The vet said today that GCC's are pretty social and they "may" get along, which would be swell, but it's okay either way. Harley is about twice as big as Libby, so I'll really have to watch them if they do play together. My other concern is that I don't want them bonding to each other and leaving ME out in the cold!

I don't think that will ever happen. They know where the TOYS come from

Glad his vet visit went well. How big is he compared to Libby? I don't think I've seen a Hahn's in person.

My two conures both love me and each other so I would think it would be possible to let them play

I'm really glad that the visit went well and that all is good! But we really do need more pictures of him

I'm glad it went well Just be really careful introducing them, put Libby somewhere safe and hold Harley on your hand - his beak is MUCH stronger than hers and can do some serious damage if he grabs her feet or beak. That's how I introduce Goober - I hold her on my hand, using a thumb to hold one of her feet down so she can't jump, and move her close but out of range. I can read her body language and know pretty much instantly how she'll react. If her head fluffs and she starts head bobbing, open beak, then she's gonna attack. That's pretty standard macaw body language, too. Wings slightly out, off the shoulder, head down or bobbing, head fluffed. Their eyes will pin and they will "blush" which is exactly how it sounds, their little white patches will flush red They're so much easier to read and predict than conures IMO

Jenny - How interesting -- I didn't know about the blushing cheeks! I'll watch out for that!

cioci t - As far as Harley's size, he's about twice as big as Libby. Libby weighs 75 grams and Harley weighs around 137 grams.

So far, Harley has been in the bird room with Libby and Angelina for a few minutes, but not close to each other. They are aware of each other, but that's about it.

I will definitely be careful when and if they ever get close together and I'll never leave them alone for sure!

Course my Parrotlet, Angelina, thinks she can rip them both a new one -- she hates any other birds -- so I have no worries about how she'll interact with either of them...she WON'T! I'm lucky she likes ME!

Harley has only been home for one week, and he's settling in very nicely. I'll take my time with introductions and see how it goes.

Will post more pics soon!

Great news on the new bird checkup!

I don't think you have to worry about these two over-bonding, unless they were sharing a cage. They aren't parrotlets, you know. . Boogie ( Sun Conure) and Tootsie Pop) are best buddies, but each of them loves me tons too!

This video is really cute and shows the size of Hahn's macaws: Sun Conure & Hahn's Macaw BFF's - YouTube
I can't believe how small they are (compared to other macaws)! Harley is adorable.

Harley Goes BACK to the Vet

I took Harley back to the vet this afternoon. I noticed he was making a slight clicking sound and bobbing his tail a little when he breathed. I called the vet and he said to bring him right in.

He cleared his nostrils and took a sample for a a lab test and also a sample from his mouth. He listened to his heart and lungs and said it sounds like the congestion is all in the upper area. The lab tests showed some abnormal bacteria. He said Harley has sinusitus, a sinus infection. He said birds mask illnesses (we sure know that), so in the bird shop, with all the other birds and noise, they might not have heard it.

He gave him a shot of Baytril to "kick-start" him getting well and gave me some oral Baytril to start giving him twice a day. He said to mist him and/or use a humidifier twice a day to help him. I have to take him back on Tuesday to see how he's doing. If he's not better, then they have to run more tests. Gosh I hope he's better!

I thought the bill for all this would be pretty expensive, but it was only $48, plus the bird shop where I bought him (Varietee's) is paying the bill as part of their guarantee! I think that's wonderful!

Please say a little prayer for my baby -- he's such a wonderful bird!

Thank you, nanay. He's playing, eating, talking, pooping, just like normal, so that's good. I just want him to get well, he's such a wonderful bird! You know how we love all our animals, and it's just so painful when they're sick.

The vet said that since I was observant and called him right away, he thinks it was caught in time. Gosh I hope so! As soon as I saw the tail bobbing, plus the clicking, I was certain something was wrong!

This avain vet is part of an animal emergency hospital and he just happens to be on duty Sunday. He said if Harley is worse tomorrow to call them and bring him right in. This vet is wonderful, very kind and caring. He was so sweet with Harley!

Thanks again, all prayers are welcome. I'll post on how he's doing.
