Harley's Return Visit to the Vet on 11/9/11

We just got back from the vet. We were there TWO HOURS. The vet checked him over completely. He said his lungs still sound clear. He took x-rays (Harley had to be slightly sedated), and said everything looks totally normal, no problems at all. He did another lab culture and said there are no abnormal cells at all.

So, thankfully, he checks out perfectly normal. The vet irrigated the nostril that sounds sniffley and said nothing irregular came out. He checked the amount of air he breathes out of each nostril and said the sniffley one passes a little less air, but he is still getting air through it. He said that, at this point, to continue with the steamy bathroom visits once a day for ten minutes. Other than that, he said just to keep an eye on him. If he goes into respiratory distress, to bring him in immediately.

I feel much better knowing he's okay, no infection, nothing abnormal, and he's healthy, so I'll just keep an eye on him. Other than the little sniffle, he's acting normally -- playing, eating, talking, so that's good.

I asked the vet if this was something that Hahn's Macaws are more susceptible to , and he said no, not any more than any other bird. So that's good too.

So, all in all, I'm much more confident that he's going to be okay, but you can BET I'll keep a close eye on him!

Thanks, everyone. I was so afraid the x-rays would show something awful (don't we all go THERE?). I asked my husband to drive me, just in case. If it was bad news, I didn't want to be driving home on the highway with a broken heart.

He's been fairly quiet this afternoon, but still playing a little and eating a lot. I just looked up and called to him -- he said, "WHAT?" in a nice strong voice.

I think I'll put them all to bed a little early tonight. Tomorrow he's going to get a good steam in the bathroom!

Gosh I love these birdies! They are so totally dependent on us for everything, we must do the very best we can for them!

Goober has allergies - she gets sneezy and itchy, we think it's the water here in town I can't bring her in the shower anymore now that I've found what it is! She gets antihistamines in her water every day, which is now bottled water (pampered brat) to counter it lol Maybe next time you meet with your vet, you can ask if he thinks that might be it?

Happy to hear he's doing better.

My African grey used to imitate coughing and sneezing and sniffle sounds. When my allergies were bad she made more noise than I did. It was pretty funny actually. She'd cough like she had pneumonia and then laugh like she was so proud of herself. I used to wonder how would I know if she was really sick or just making fun of me. Maybe Harley knows that if he makes a sniffle sound he gets attention. Although you did say the vet thought his nostril was a little stuffy so maybe not. I hope you don't need to make anymore trips to the vet for a good long time.

Thanks! He came home (3 weeks ago) from the bird shop saying "Achoo" and bobbing his head -- so cute! I wonder if he was around someone with a cold, and that's how he got the sinusitis. He's not really sneezing, and on my first visit, the vet did a culture and did find abnormal cells. Those are gone now, thankfully.

He hasn't made the sniffle sound in his right nostril today, so that's good. He still says "achoo" whenever my husband or I sneeze, or even if one of the dogs sneezes! SO FUNNY!

Love this bird!
