Benvolio needs your help!

I need some help with this new bird. I bought a Quaker parrot last week I had no idea they were so cuddly. I previously owned 2 budgies but when I moved to the states I had o leave them one was sick and had to be put down ( I had taken it to the vet numerous times but it kept getting sick, I suspect it was giardia) the other went to a nice family that i met with beforehand. I still had a cage and I missed my birds so much so my fiance and I bought this quaker parrot. I originally wanted to buy from a breeder but I couldn't find one that had any that were even close to ready in NY and we had seen one in the pet store we were at that said it had been tested for chlamydia ect (but not giardia) I looked at its droppings at the store and they looked ok to me there so we decided because it was registered banded vaccinated and tested it was a good one to get. It has been here for about a week and loves to cuddle it purrs and gives kisses and bobs it's head and acts relatively normal. it's feathers look a little scruffy but it's only 6 months old so I figured it was still growing them. Second day it was here my fiance and I took it in the shower. (soap was done with it was just water when the bird got in) it was very excited and drank a LOT of water that was running off our noses mostly lol. Then after we took it out of the shower it threw up once and had runny frequent poops ( after talking about it we decided it was a combination of too much water and too much too soon) I have been keeping a close eye on its poops since then they are not too frequent seem to follow the every 20 minute mark except once when we both left and my fiance left it out of the cage at which point i think it panicked. today it had a loose poo was really mostly dirty water looking then later had quite a large poo that was wet and unusual looking. I forgot to take a picture sorry. it was thick but the poo part was not runny the water part was off color and it was not a tight round curl. I am so terrified because I lost one sweetheart to what I believed was giardia please can you give opinions is he just stressed out or do you think he's sick? also has anyone used apple cider vinegar as a preventative for bacteria what is the ratio to water that you use? his behavior seems normal chirps bobs cleans himself eats (not fruit and veg yet) and drinks water any input will be well appreciated.

to the forum! He sounds like a sweetie!!

Is he eating? When birds don't eat enough, they will tap into their own stores of fat and their droppings will get a dark brown in color. As for watery poo, is it consistent? He could have just been really stressed.

If you were to use apple cider vinegar, just put a few drops in his water. Make sure you are using a plastic dish, it will react with any metal dishes and can make the bird sick.

Monitor him for a day or two and if you don't see any improvement in his droppings, take him to a vet. If the pet shop did all that testing, they likely have a health guarantee. Try to take him to the vet before that expires so they can help cover the costs if anything is wrong

I have a plastic water bottle like for a hamster so it doesn't get poop in it but it has a metal nozzle where he drinks from will it react with that should I switch to a different kind? all he's eating is the colorful parrot food they were giving him in the store I made sure to get the same kind so he would eat he doesn't eat huge amounts of it but he does eat. i'll go get some vinegar and put it in a plastic dish for now xo thank you for your help

I would use a water dish for now, not the bottle, just to be safe Is it Kaytee Exact? Or maybe Pretty Bird? The colorful food can change the color of their poop up kind of randomly; if he was feeling red today, his poo will be more red, if he was feeling green, more green, etc. Both lines sell a "natural" or "organic" line with no dye in it, I would switch him over to that so you can keep a better eye on his droppings once he's really settled in. I wouldn't make any major diet or cage changes for the first month so he get cozy and relaxed

Did you say you used the soap before he got in? That might be the case. Like the smell of it. Just keep a close eye on him. If it persists then take him in.

thanks for the info guys definitely won't be using soap around him we thought we washed it off but could be the smell. he has colored food which i was worried about getting but it's what he was eating at the store and it was more important to me that the transition was smoothe than the food was what i would opt to feed him i'd love to have him eating vegi's and fruit and try and encourage hm all the time but he's not buying it yet
