stupid me... and i am to blame here, not munch. i usually have something covering the top of her cage. but i moved around the room and completely forgot.
well, before i could even move, tsuka flew to the top of munch's cage, and you can imagine what happened from there. she tried to pull him by his toe through the bars. i rushed over and pulled him away from her before the damage got worse...
but she broke his toe, this time worse than dally's. with the help of a friend (who's been a vet tech for years) i've been keeping an eye on it, and its splinted. so far everything's been done thats needed to be done, we are keeping it clean and watching for infection.
the fracture itself is pretty bad. we're still not sure what is going to happen with the toe, its a wait and see how it heals. it can go one of two ways, it can either heal fine or die off. we're hoping it heals up nicely. it was a compound fracture, the bone was exposed and his claw was kinda held on with only a flap of skin, but enough tissue where theres hope of saving the claw. i did not get a photo of this as i was too busy trying to stop the bleeding and getting it cleaned up.
this happened yesterday afternoon. please keep tsuka in your thoughts. i feel horrible. hes past the stage we have to worry about shock, he has eaten more this evening, but he has lost weight from not eating. he did not eat much (hes eaten a bit of an avicake yesterday but thats all) after the incident. but with some coaxing, he has started to eat and is going to bed with a full crop.
however he dropped from 118 to 112 in a week (last time i weighed him)
i am making a progress chart for his healing progress (good and bad)
so if you dont like potential grossness, i would avoid the thread. warning, some photos may be graphic.
today, the dark colours is all bruising. and scab. but so far everything is ok... the splinting is keeping the toe perfectly alligned, while keeping the wound exposed to keep it clean and to maintain it as well as observe it. i plan on changing the splinting in a week. this way it will be cleaner, but the toe needs to heal a bit first. he WAS in the hospital cage, but was refusing to eat. so he stayed in overnight last night but hes back in with dally and hes eating and relaxing. i placed a pillow case at the bottom of the cage so he has something soft and clean to walk on and so he doesnt catch the toe in the grate.
room temps are staying at 85F at the vet tech's recommendations. i am handfeeding him a supplement feeding once a day closer to the evening to be sure he's getting enough to eat and extra calcium (powdered cuttlebone in the formula) and energy (honey). lucky he needs the extra energy and calories right now.
this is the progress chart i am making, i will update it as there are changes or by the day.
