Unhappy Munch claimed another victim

stupid me... and i am to blame here, not munch. i usually have something covering the top of her cage. but i moved around the room and completely forgot.

well, before i could even move, tsuka flew to the top of munch's cage, and you can imagine what happened from there. she tried to pull him by his toe through the bars. i rushed over and pulled him away from her before the damage got worse...

but she broke his toe, this time worse than dally's. with the help of a friend (who's been a vet tech for years) i've been keeping an eye on it, and its splinted. so far everything's been done thats needed to be done, we are keeping it clean and watching for infection.

the fracture itself is pretty bad. we're still not sure what is going to happen with the toe, its a wait and see how it heals. it can go one of two ways, it can either heal fine or die off. we're hoping it heals up nicely. it was a compound fracture, the bone was exposed and his claw was kinda held on with only a flap of skin, but enough tissue where theres hope of saving the claw. i did not get a photo of this as i was too busy trying to stop the bleeding and getting it cleaned up.

this happened yesterday afternoon. please keep tsuka in your thoughts. i feel horrible. hes past the stage we have to worry about shock, he has eaten more this evening, but he has lost weight from not eating. he did not eat much (hes eaten a bit of an avicake yesterday but thats all) after the incident. but with some coaxing, he has started to eat and is going to bed with a full crop.

however he dropped from 118 to 112 in a week (last time i weighed him)

i am making a progress chart for his healing progress (good and bad)

so if you dont like potential grossness, i would avoid the thread. warning, some photos may be graphic.

today, the dark colours is all bruising. and scab. but so far everything is ok... the splinting is keeping the toe perfectly alligned, while keeping the wound exposed to keep it clean and to maintain it as well as observe it. i plan on changing the splinting in a week. this way it will be cleaner, but the toe needs to heal a bit first. he WAS in the hospital cage, but was refusing to eat. so he stayed in overnight last night but hes back in with dally and hes eating and relaxing. i placed a pillow case at the bottom of the cage so he has something soft and clean to walk on and so he doesnt catch the toe in the grate.

room temps are staying at 85F at the vet tech's recommendations. i am handfeeding him a supplement feeding once a day closer to the evening to be sure he's getting enough to eat and extra calcium (powdered cuttlebone in the formula) and energy (honey). lucky he needs the extra energy and calories right now.

this is the progress chart i am making, i will update it as there are changes or by the day.

its not munch's fault. i cant blame her for being a lovebird. it was my fault, i forgot to cover the top of the cage. stupid move on my behalf and tsuka had to pay for my forgetfullness. shes got a cage tray covering the top now and thats not going anywhere now. this wasnt supposed to happen again

hes standing on it, hes talking and whistling and playing a bit and even asking for scritches. it was sore this morning though., but hes really good about it.

this was last night after cleaning it and putting the antiseptic cream on

I know it isn't her fault... she is what she is... but don't be to hard on yourself either , it was an accident .. I think your hurting as much as he is.. and I hope you both feel better soon.

Ah poor Tsuka. Looking at the picture's it looks like it's healing well. Hopefully that will continue.

We have to be careful of my lovebird as well, she's pulled out feather's from other birds before from inside her cage. One time before we moved we had a rat in the house and of course it wanted the bird food, but it got a little too close to Casey and she grabed it's tail, the rat went to screaming bloody murder. She wouldn't let go, she was bopping up and down tweeting so happily. I don't think she hurt it too bad, but it was sure scared.

So far no rat problem here we live in the Desert and I'm pretty sure they wouldn't get within 1 mile of Chole. I honestly never realized that lovebirds were like this untill I come on this forum. They are so beautiful, but so ornery

i knew they were temperamental before i got them... but munch is quite extreme lol she kinda jinxed herself here.

i mean, shes begging for out of cage time. pacing and going nuts. but with tsuka injured, no one is getting out of cage time until he is at least healed much more than he is now. he will be in that splint at least 3-4 weeks.

cant let tiels out, he risks banging the toe. cant let the lovebirds out, they scare the tiels through the cage! so no one wins here, i feel bad, but i got to put tsuka's health first.

mango is pretty content to stay in his cage. he finds stuff to do and loves to just relax and snuggle with his fleece toys. but munch paces and goes nuts following me around the cage and dally screams and tsuka chirps nonstop to be let out. it will be at least a few weeks before anyone is let out. as tsuka's toe heals, i may let him out for short amounts of time, but the lovebirds can at all. too much stress isnt good. so i need to find ways to keep them busy. lucky christmas is in a few days and they will all have new toys and treats! so it will be easier then. but i am going to be working on some new things for them too until then. they will be busy for a long time.

i must say, splints are not easy on little toes! the squirming... the tiny strips of bandage around the toenail to keep the broken toe in place and keeping the cut exposed to heal properly, thats pretty darn tedious. oh, and keeping the BEAK away from the q-tip piece. over all, splinting him took about 30 minutes for one toe.

i am lucky tsuka doesnt seem bothered by the splint at all. doesnt pick at it, walks just fine on it and everything just fine as if it wasnt even there. so thats a nice bonus, having a bird who co operates.

future reference to anyone with toe biting birds. have bandages and q-tips in your first aid kit. i'd be lost without these in mine! and antiseptic cream!

I'm so sorry this happened to your little bub. I hope it heals quickly and the toe is saved.

My lovies have hurt a couple of toes here as well and one of my poor budgies' top beak was ripped off almost to the base. Lovies are gorgeous but can do some damage when they want to.

It's really looking quite good for as bad an injury as it was... I noticed a lump on the toe by the nail but then compared to the other toes it is just a toe pad sorta thing...lol My main concern ( as I am sure is yours ) would be infection... watch for redness and warmth in the foot and leg above the injury as well . You are doing an awesome job with it!!
