living with a tumour

As many of you know I have a young male budgie with a suspected kidney or testicular tumour... so far other than a little weakness and a paralyzed leg he seems pretty much ok.. he has lost some weight but still has zest for life... we have decided to let him live what time he has with out intervention for the tumour. When he starts to lose his love of life and starts to suffer we will send him over the rainbow bridge gently. I was wondering if any one knows on average how fast these tumours grow and how long a bird lives when they have one... thanks everyone in advance.

i have no experience with tumours in birds, and the cancer our cat had was aggressive, she only had a week to live if we didnt get the tumours removed. so i cant really offer help with that area im sorry. but it is a good idea to spoil him, make him comfortable and make his last moments with you the best hes had. which i know you will do.

I'm very sorry to hear this, but at least you are making his last moments wonderful for him. I don't know what to say, I've never had to deal with it

Thanks Daisy... I hope you never do have to deal with it... I guess my way of looking at it is, it is all part of pet ownership... if you close yourself off from the pain of losing something ( or someone for that matter ) then you will never truely know the joy of loving it... you will always be holding part back gor fear of the pain of losing it. I love my animals wholeheartedly.... and grieve when I lose them... but accept that as part of the package... I know... I am sort of rambling , just trying to put thoughts and feelings into words... I am not sure I am succeding tho.

its good to let out what you feel, and i get what you are saying. its part of the sacrifices with pet ownership. you want to give the best life to them you can give, to enjoy their company for their whole life, but you know you will outlive them or something can happen and you will have to say goodbye. but, thats why you make every one of their days special

Yes Casey... and I am very glad I have him... I know a lot of people place no value on a budgies life... after all they are a dime a dozen... to me it is not about money , but about loving a life... one co-worker of my hubbys when told we were going to the vet said... FOR a BIRD???? Then he said " I would just ( and he made neck snapping motions )" I told hubby I would not give that guy a pet rock... what a jerk... that 'just a bird' is worth at least 10 of that so called 'man'!!

i hear you. people think we are crazy. but budgies are great birds, and worth a lot in personality. theyre just so full of spunk that theyre hard to resist. i plan on having a pair of budgies after all these guys. thats i think what i want because i dont think im cut out for larger parrots and every time i see budgies i fall in love all over again. i really miss mine, i hardly got to know him, but i still love budgies. theyre such loving little birds and theyre just so fun to watch be birds. people dont get animal people, much less bird people! ive had people ask how birds play because they know i make bird toys as a hobby and they didnt know that birds play.... goes to show... people just dont understand birds.

I had an eastern rosella with a tumor and we were going to try surgery but he stopped breathing whenever they put the anesthetic on, then we tried steroids which seemed to be working but then he got really weak and passed on, Im so sorry I know how hard it is just spoil him and give him all the love you can and hell feel your love.

Thank you Jessie... when i talk to him he puffs up his little cheeks and chatters back at me... when I offer him my open palm up han he slides into it... these last few days he has adapted to the paralyzed leg quite well.

I had people who don't value small animals lives. We had a mouse who had something seriously wrong, I think it was ear mites that had gotten so bad she'd cut all of her face open I got loads of treatment, took her to the vets and anything and I came back from school one day to find my granddad about to squash her with a brick. He got a huge slap around the chops and I took my poor mouse back in with me. She died a few weeks later

Beau is still doing ok... no better... I have 2 doses of the meloxicam left , but told hubby it was not working and just stresses him out giving it to him, I decided to stop it. It was just to rule out tramatic injury , not to really treat anything. He is very skinny , but is free feeding on seeds , hemp seeds , treat sticks and millet . He also is still eating his broccoli . He seems frail, but still seems to be enjoying life... I don't think it will be much longer... I would be surprised if he makes it another month. We have not had a good weekend... on saturday we lost the tranny in our car and woke up to no internet yesterday morning which took all day to fix... hubby needs transposition surgery on his ulner nerve. We are now wondering if it is worth fixing our car or if we should go car shopping... not a good start to 2012!!
