Charley has to go the to vet - I'm worried -- NOW I'M RELIEVED!!

I'm taking Charley, my Hahns Macaw, to my avian vet. He just hasn't seemed like himself the last few days and I'm worried.

He's eating and pooping just fine, but he stopped talking and he doesn't play with his toys at all. This is totally out of character for him. He's sleeping a lot more too. He doesn't seem weak, hasn't lot weight, and gets around his cage without any problems. He's still sweet and affectionate with me, but just doesn't answer me when I talk to him. Before, he'd be talking and playing most of the day.

The only noise he makes is kind of a squawk and at the same time, he jerks his head up and back a little. I've felt his neck and head and checked his upper and lower beak and all looks fine. His eyes look alert and clear and his cere is clean and dry. He hasn't fallen or injured himself either.

I'm at a loss as to what it could be, so I need the vet to check him out. The technician at the vet's office said "You know your bird and you know when something isn't right."

The earliest appointment I could get was Tuesday (tomorrow) at 4 p.m. Please keep my baby in your prayers. I love him so much!

Thanks, Daisy. Thanks, Jack.

I wish I could have gotten him in to the vet today, but it's Monday and they're really busy. He's eating and drinking okay, not fluffed up or anything, but I'm still so worried!

Maybe you should give him some extra love while you wait.
I hope he's ok?
Do you have any honey, or apple cider vinegar?
Its a good health boost.
Did he have any hot food?
My tiel acts wierd when she cant clear her crop,
Doing that wierd yawning coughing action.
Anyway, I really hope Charlie is fine and its something simple.

Thanks, Kate. This looks a little different than that stretching, yawn thing they do when "rearranging" their crop. It's more of an upward jerk, fast, and a sqawk at the same time.

I probably won't sleep tonight......

It sounds like he's just not feeling well so he's reverting a bit back to baby squeaks. We have had macaws do that before, they are sick and not eating as much so they regress a bit. We had a greenwing with aspergillosis and she would make baby sounds, do the same sleepy head jerk n squawk, and flap her wings. I don't think Charley is near that sick, because she was sneezing, losing weight, etc. but it's fairly normal for young birds not feeling well to revert a bit. Try tempting him with some warm, soft foods to keep him eating and keep him warm

Thanks, everyone.

Thanks, Jenny, for your suggestions. He seems to be eating just fine at this point. This jerk/squawk/wing thing he does seems involuntary. I hope he's not in pain. Gosh I'm so worried!

Wish it was tomorrow at 4 p.m.!

Thanks, Bob & Shelly!

He doesn't make the jerk/squawk noise when he's sleeping, so I covered him up at 7 p.m., wanting him to get a good night's sleep. About 9 p.m., I heard him moving around a little, so I carefully lifted the sheet. He looked at me and said "Night-night"! I said, "Gimme Kiss" and he climbed over to the front of the cage, gave me a kiss and said "Thank you"! My baby!!! He didn't make the jerk/squawk noise at all.

I took him out, held him for a few minutes and then put him back in his cage. As I covered him up again, he said "Gimme kiss"! All this made me feel so much better!

I'll keep a close eye on him tomorrow. I may still take him to the vet, I'll decide tomorrow. He's such a wonderful, sweet bird! I just want him to be well and happy!

I'll post on how it goes -- keep your fingers crossed!

Oh no, I was hoping he was doing better today. I concur with Jenny that it's very common for Macaws to regress back to babydom the first year. Did you know that in the wild, all baby Macaws are fed by their patents for the first year? Tootsie showed a lot of regression her first year with us, and we gave her "comfort" hand feedings every night at bedtime. Just thoughts...Praying your baby Charley is okay.... XO!
