Driftwood

So I went to Canada to fish tthe other day and found awesome driftwood pieces for my tank... Only to find out its a cedar or pine, so it's not good for my tank... But, is it safe for Kona and Fred to climb on? I've heard there's oils in there and it's called a softwood. I just wanted to check. And if it doesn't work I know a fish taxidermist who will use them easily.

If I remember correctly, we had a discussion about driftwood here in the past, or on the linnie forum, and the general consensus was it wasn't worth the risk. If it was freshwater driftwood, I suppose you could bake it the same as if you'd taken it off a tree and clean it really well like you would a live branch.. the difficulty would be making sure 100% which kind of wood it is, if there's any strange bacteria or microbes in it from decomposing in water, etc. If it's saltwater driftwood, then I would say it's not safe because it's been absorbing salt from the water for so long, there's no completely getting it out.

Oh ok, thanks. Better safe then sorry! I'll just give them to the taxidermist, I could just picture a big crappie on one of 'em!
