Question Biting Feathers

Ok guys I have a quick question for you all with large parrots, and maybe even the smaller ones too.

I have a scarlet macaw named Phoenix as some of you may know. Up till now I've had no issue with him at all, he's 8 months old now and still growing! Any way my question is....is it normal for them to start biting off their wing feathers at this age? He's not plucking his feathers, he will just hold his wing/s in his foot and chew at a feather until he snaps the end of it off. He's done this to 3 feathers on his right wing and 2 on his left, so needless to say he's having issues flying now. He can still fly straight but he can't get any height.

Well just wondering if this is normal and he will stop or if not what can I do about it?

Thanks!

I have a pineapple green cheek conure that will pull her tail around with her foot and chew on the feathers making them all raggedy... She gets lots of attention, has a large flight cage with lots of toys, lots of out of cage time and has a good diet with lots of fresh and cooked foods. I am not sure why she does this except she seems to enjoy it... Like a baby sucking her thumb. I made chew toys out of molted feathers tied together and hung them where I see her chewing her tail... It seems to help and she will chew those feathers till there is just a shaft left. I have no other advise as this is my only experience with this.

Is he eating any of the feather or just chewing it off?

I have a U2 & right after a trip to the vet in a carrier he started chewing off his tail feather till they snapped! The vet advised that most generally this will occur after either a frightfull experience or from stress of a change in ambience. You mentioned you just came back from a trip? Even if he seemed to take it all in stride, it's much like humans, we can stress even a seemingly positive event.. Now Elvis has stopped this all together. It lasted about 7 days after our road trip. Just watch him carefully.

I'm sorry if you mentioned this already but has he been veted? This would rule out any medical condition.

Good luck to ya...keep up your good job with him..keep us informed.

No he isn't eating them just snapping them off and leaving them. Yes we just got back from a 12 day trip so that might be the case since he started this about a week after we got back.

It doesn't seem to be hurting him he just snaps them off and leaves them, all it's doing is effecting his flying.

Yes he has been to the vet just before the trip and he's medically fine.

Snap, chew...same thing. Since he is healthy, chances are it IS due to stress. Try not to make any changes and keep a tight routine for him, I'm sure it will subside.....Worked for me.

Ok at least it's just stress. It could be boredom as well so I'm trying to give him new toys and things to do.

He's bitten off a few more feathers yesterday so he can't fly too well, other then that he seems healthy

Yup, you could never have enough toys for these guys...LOL~~thats a good idea. It will be fine. Just remember that they pick up on our feelings so try to be calm & stress free around him..

Will do! Well at least he can't get into as much mischief this way because he can't fly anywhere And I didn't even have to clip his wings (which I never would), he did that himself

Well I sure try to be!

I gave him a bath this evening, we haven't been able to work up to the shower yet. I was so proud of him, for the first time he stepped off my hand and into the water (he kept a hold of my hand with his one foot the whole time though, so cute!!)

My green cheek conure, Apple, used to do that, too. He's grab his tail feathers and
hold onto them. I can't recall if he actually chewed them or anything, I don't think
he did, but he definitely liked to grab them! In fact, he died this way... (found him
dead like that...)

No he is still biting his feathers, when I see him do it I stop him though. He seems to be healthy other then that and doesn't look stressed.
