Bobby's first time out

after 2 days of 'intense' step-up training with bobby, i decided that today would be his first day out. i clipped is wings and then put him back in the cage. he was pretty scared i should have waited a day because he didn't really like me after that and didn't want to practice stepping up like we usually do. but stupid me decided to take him out

he was very scared in the outside world and tried to fly away. then i put him on the tree with leon, butch, and pickles. no one really was interested in him at first. pickles was actually the first to say hi, almost trying to comfort him, being a newbie to the tree herself leon said hi and then left with butch to go to the window play gym.

i kept him out probably only a half an hour. he needs a lot more work on stepping up when he get used to me again before his next time out of the cage.

he was very nervous on the tree (he should get used to it as he comes out more, like pickles did). butch got very jealous when leon went to go se him

the tree looks so crowded with 4 fids on it! i can't imagine what all 8 of them will look like on it

more adventures to come Bobby Bird!!

Bobby is absolutely beautiful I'm sure that with time he will settle down. I think he will be steadier once his flights grow back in and he knows that the tree is his safe spot

Pickles has only been coming out for about a week and a half and she is comfortable on the tree so I am sure if I take Bobby out everyday that he will enjoy it too

he is doing a little better today. he did fly off the tree once and fell behind by bed. now he is back on the tree and preening, sang a little, and even took some millet hopefully with in a week or so, he will do better at coming out and going back (he flies off the perch when he comes out because he is scared)

Shelly a beautiful flock! Thanks for sharing. Bobby will follow the behavior of the other birds and be just as happy soon.

You might want to consider putting something soft under the perch because, if he keeps on falling like a rock to the floor, he could end up hurt or worse.

Yes I was thinking that! Add some towels around the bottom. You don't want a broken keel bone or worse

when he fell, he actually flew. he has clipped wings but i am figuring out that he is a strong flier and can go pretty far. my bed is pretty far aways from the tree and i dodnt expect him to get that far

update! since bobby is so nervous outside the cage and is very scared of me and the perch, i am trying new training techniques before he come out on the tree again. i am instead putting a perch on the outside of the cage and luring him with millet on it and doing more in cage training and getting him on the perch and bringing him a foot outside the cage. yesterday, leon flew over so i put him on the outside perch and i opened the cage door which has a perch on it that bobby was on. they were getting along ok and then bobby decided to climb to the top of the cage with leon and butch bobby being his nervous self didn't want to get on the perch to go back and flew off to a play gym. he wasn't excited about coming on the perch but i did get him back pickles on the other hand has really gotten used to coming out with ease and chewing on the balsa wood toys i have for her (and my window! )

It's funny how we have to treat each bird differently like we have to with kids.

Shelly - how often are your birds out?? They seem like they are out of their cages a lot, which is great!

Everyday! On school days they are out for 4 hours, saturdays I go work at the barn in the morning and so they get about 40 minutes on the tree before I go and then usually 7 hours when I come home and days that I am doing nothingthey get 10-11 hours or tree time!! right now since it's dark they go back around 7 pm, but I won't be surprised if they go back closer to 8-8:30 during the summer. They tree has everything they need... 3 food cups, 2 water cup, a cuttlebone, toys, and friends! Some of them will take an afternoon nap and others will just sit quietly with their eyes closed it's great to be a fid at my house .... 2 trees... 4 play gyms.... Every one of them gets used too! *if only I could rescue more fids*

Be careful about keeping them up after dark in the winter, there are no more opportunistic breeders than budgies and, if they start breeding off-season, you could end up with an eggbound hen.

i havent noticed anything currently. they are all males except for pickles and i think baby bird, but lately i am thinking that baby bird is actually a boy . pickles is hormonal right now and chasing some of them off, but she mostly keeps to herself

Couldn't agree more. They're very prolific. At the moment mine are going into their indoor bird room which is usually set around 78 and they're all trying to breed Outside it's frosty! But in there it's lovely and toasty... Sigh
