Surprise! More Fernando photos!

I wasn't expecting this earlier

The photo I had before, you really couldn't tell what a bad way he was in. As soon as I get him I want to screen him and do a CBC to see what's going on and how/where I can improve with him. He was on a constant diet of water, peanuts and sun flower seeds. Now he's happily eating fresh veggies, fruits and cooked foods. Hopefully I can improve on that diet all together and get him eating as much of a natural diet as possible. As you can tell by his beak, it's not done him any good. That's another thing I will have done as soon as I get him. Beak trim! I hope his liver isn't overly damaged, fatty liver disease is so hard to live with (as you'll remember my rescue dusky lory, Dusty, you'll know how much medication he had to have daily). I will try and fix him up the best I can

I also noticed that you can really see how bent his legs are here. How anybody can approve or even think of chaining a parrot to it's perch I do not know. His two broken legs are now fully functional, but very off

I found out his age too... not an accurate measure but we know he's in his late teens

Just thought I'd share

I'll be collecting him this October as I'm already going to be making a trip I expected to be waiting for anything up to a few years to be honest, so I'm glad he's coming a bit sooner. I'd really like to find a companion for him but there's never usually any going

And thank you, I think he's gorgeous too!

Thanks for sharing that Daisy.

You, and many other members here who rescue these poor forgotten birds have my heartfelt gratitude and my deepest admiration.

I just love reading these stories as they really restore my faith in humanity.

Cheers,

John.

Thank you John! I have found that rescue parrots seem to make the best companions, you can really tell when they appreciate something and winning them over is the best challenge!

In my experience Daisy, the same could be said of many humans.

Cheers,

John.

Fernando is a beautiful and adorable parrot, I love his colours.
I'm glad to hear that he started eating a healthy diet.
The parrot's livers often can regenerate. Milk thistle powder is very helpful.
Do you already know when you can get him?

Thank you! It can indeed regenerate but unfortunately sometimes the damage can be far too great, as was the case of Dusty the dusky lory He was on a milk thistle extract medication at the time too and it did help

Awesome! I understand his you feel. Squirrel (named so because so nutty!) is finally coming around. Not so loud, still a bit nervous. I think the super loudness was also a byproduct if wanting to be heard over the other birds the girl had. Where here everybody is relatively quiet... I can now goto to the cage and talk, feed/water without him/her climbing up into the top corner of the cage. I had to gradually use the cover on the cage to get them used to seeing everybody else, this week I was finally able to totally remove it from the last back 2 inches of the cage. I still keep the side of Shelby's cage covered on that side. I'm going to start to gradually move that back so they can see each other now. I have had squirrel out and held them up near Shelby's cage to let them talk and see each other (as well as the rest if the flock). My friend is still interested, just our schedules and weather has kept her from coming up. I also want to send off one if the DNA kits I have on squirrel.

Awww, he is beautiful! He'll do just fine, Daisy, with your good diet and care and any other species of amazon would work as a companion (they all like each other).

As to liver damage, I have several birds that came to me in real bad shape and the trick is to give them aloe vera juice (from inner filet, not the whole leaf), milk thistle and dandelion root non-alcoholic liquid extract in their water as well as capsules in their soft food along with artichoke extract, vit B6, biotin, SamE (or methionine if you find the SamE too expensive) and lots of fruits high in vit C. Once the bile acids leves go back to a normal range, just continue with the milk thistle, dandelion root and SamE or methionine. I have a 21 year old cockatiel hen that came to me in Aug/2012 and which the avian vet told me to put down because she wasn't going to last two months with her advanced liver and kidney damage. Well, she did not only not die, she got better and she just finished laying a clutch of four perfect eggs!

Daisy, your bird is absolutely stunning. Would you care to share a picture of your cage. I just acquired a 32 year old panama amazon and looking for ideas as far as which cage to get her.

That's awesome! The experience I've had with fatty liver was terrible. I adopted the bird fully knowing that it could be hours, days, weeks, months or years, we wouldn't really know as it was pretty bad. He died in 10 days after I adopted him and even though I knew he was dying it still came as a huge shock to me when he did. It was very soon and sudden

I don't have him yet so I can't tell you what his current set up is like. I did however post my other Amazon's set up in your thread
