She flew!

Sakura is getting more confident and more cockatoo-like!

I had her on her play stand, while I was on my laptop at the kitchen table. Suddenly she flew about twenty feet and landed on the table! Up until now, she has only flown when scared. She has a partial clip and is missing most of her tail, plus she's overweight, so I assume it's not the easiest thing for her. I'm proud! Of course now, that means I have to watch out. She's currently chewing on my shirt label after having thoroughly inspected my computer.

Yay! That's so awesome. ^_^ I loved it when we still had Hermes and he FINALLY grew out all of his flight feathers and was learning to fly! It was so scary at first because he was so clumsy but it was awesome once he got the hang of it!
I love having flighted birds, although I'm sure with a Cockatoo you have to be on constant watch, lol.

Indeed, haha...constant vigilance! She has been a BRAT all morning. Stealing my cereal, being very "beaky" and generally wanting to stick her face in everything. Glad to see she's feeling more comfortable, lol. The angelic act was nice while it lasted.

(She is a sweetheart though...she's allowed to have her moments!)

I felt like I was watching a pink, feathered beach ball fly! (Don't tell her I said that, haha). But yeah, it's a great feeling!

Although my linnies are parrot like they are too small to mess around with flight suits and I don't like having to poop every where to clean, just saying

Maybe I am misunderstanding, but are you saying you keep your birds clipped just because you don't want to clean up poop in various places? I find that very sad. They are birds...they fly and they poop, that is their nature.

Great news! And I agree with Daisy and most of the other posters, seeing a bird in flight and having one fly to YOU is one of the most wonderful things one can experience. And, even if it wasn't healthier for them both physically and emotionally (as well as kinder to them on our part), I would still keep them flighted just for the sheer feeling of awe when they do it.

You misunderstood me. I have a slight trim to only the first two flight feathers (usually a normal clip is 4-5 flight feathers) which means my birds can fly straight but not up. My birds are allowed to fly in the bird room, but I have high ceilings in the whole house including the bird room with a ceiling fan. There is a high top over the closet. If I needed to get to one of my birds I'd need a very tall ladder. Nor would I want to get up on the ladder to clean up there. In fact recently I had the carpet taken out of this room replaced with laminated wood for easy poop clean up. They hated the loud vacuum cleaner so now I just sweep or wipe up. I have a window with greener out side it. Being in California there are times when the window with a screen can and is open year round. My birds love to fly there to look out. Now you have the whole picture AND yes my birds do fly to me!

I think anyone that said they wouldn't mind poop all over their house would be lying or if not, I would seriously start to question their hygiene. LOL. Poop is one of the reasons I like small birds in addition to many other reasons. My birds are so little that they only need a few flight feathers to be able to fly quite well. Especially my parrotlet. Parrotlets are excellent flyers when fully flighted-little torpedoes zooming around-if they don't want to be caught (considering their personalities, that is pretty much always), you will NEVER catch them. When a few feathers are clipped- they fly like normal birds, LOL. My sister's plet (who is very tame) recently had a few feathers clipped because he was zooming around the house, hiding, and playing with TV wires etc., my sister was running around the house like a mad woman. Thank goodness the door never opened when he was zooming around.

It seems like she finally had a breakthrough in confidence today...she's finally realizing that she can use her wings to get where she wants. She is now following me around the apartment, flying from her tree to the kitchen table or couch, and from there to my shoulder or arm. While this surely means she's going to be getting in a lot more trouble, I'm so excited that she will finally start to become more physically fit! She is turning into a whole new bird; a true cockatoo instead of a shy, slightly phobic perch potato.
