Eclectus to see Avian Vet

Hi:
Update on Kahli: I have a 20 year old Eclectus that has an old injury to his foot that was never treated properly or at all. He walks on the side of the curled foot now. His avian vet has him on medicine for pain.

He is going on Monday to his avian vet in New Hampshire for blood work, x rays and whatever else he needs. He still perches on his swing which is lowered to about 2 inches off floor and he has a rubber pad under his newspapers to keep him comfortable. His ability to climb is not as good as it was. Hopefully his kidneys are ok since being on Metacam. Just a bit worried. I've had him for about 11 years.

Anyway just wanted to check in. If anyone else here has a bird with similar problems would like to hear from you. Basically I try to keep him comfortable. He eats and talks well and looks good except for his foot.

Kahli's vet appointment went well. Even though he has an injured foot and on pain meds, my avian vet said the foot is not swollen and is not in a lot of discomfort. He took x-rays and did a complete CBC blood count. He also trimmed his beak and nails. He made some slight changes in his pain meds but overall health is good for this 21 year old Eclectus. Vet said the foot problem should not alter his life span. I was relieved. Kahli goes back to see his vet in the spring. Wonderful avian vet. He specializes in Exotic medicine. I was very impressed with his knowledge. He is in New Hampshire in case anyone here needs a good avian vet.

Glad to hear your Ekkie's appointment went well! It's always stressful worrying about our feathered kid's health! I would love to see photos of your boy ^_^

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Your birds are gorgeous! And glad to hear that the vet visit went well. Hopefully you'll be able to keep him happy and comfortable if you stick to what you're doing

Thank you

Thanks KTyne. Are you into reptiles too? Last summer (in Maine) I had a (I think) tree frog attached to my glass storm door. He visited there frequently but I had to shoo him away when I let my chihuahua outside. Afraid she would eat the tiny creature. He was brown. About the size of a half dollar. Sweet little thing.

Thanks. Kahli is perching more now that he is getting his medicine once a day instead of every other day. He is coming out of his cage more now too. So nice to see. After I put a bunch of safe colorful baby toys he is more active. He's not a chewer since beaks on Eclectus are not strong. I like to think he enjoys all the colors. One is a ball with toy inside that he can push around. He doesn't usually play with toys.

I am for sure I have 9 reptiles: 1 bearded dragon, 1 cherry headed tortoise, 1 crested gecko, 1 african fat-tailed gecko, 1 leopard gecko, 1 mexican rosy boa, 1 corn snake, and 2 kenyan sand boas :P

I love finding wild reptiles and amphibians, was always a highlight of my childhood to go "hunt" for them in the local wetlands (released immediately after catching of course)!

I have yet to actually see any of our native herps but my dog unfortunately was bitten by an adder in 2014! Not a fun few trips to the vets I must admit

Oh it was! Her face was a balloon and she needed a few different treatments to get her back to normal. She was looking very sorry for herself

Adder? Is that a snake? Ugh. Sorry for your poor dog. I'm not a snake person. Around my house in the country in Maine we have huge snakes not poisonous though. They have long orange and cream colored stripes going down the length of them. I've never seen them before in Maine and thought they may have come from a pet shop and let lose and multiplied. There are lots of them in the fields. Kind of creeped me out when I moved in the place. I used to have baby ones in my basement until I found away to close of cellar drain hole. I would let them go out in the fields.
