I brought home a Maximilian Pionus on Wednesday. OMG I LOVE the sounds this bird makes. It’s like little bird sounds coming out of a bigger bird. :O) I paid $225 for him/her. S/he was hatched June 24th but his/her previous owner can’t remember if it was 5 or 6 years ago. S/he has a band but I haven’t tried to look at it yet.

I’m calling him/her SweetyPi until I have him/her DAN’d. His/her feathers aren’t in good shape. No evidence of plucking or over grooming but what looks like just the opposite. His/her feathers aren’t “zipped” nice and smooth, and look kind of greasy. Any thoughts on what I might be able to do about it would be great. I’m thinking baths would help, at least I know they won’t hurt. :O)

I didn’t purchase his/her cage. It was big enough but it doesn’t break down so it wouldn’t fit in my car. His/her previous owner said s/he is very cage aggressive, so I thought a different cage would be great. I got this cage for him/her for just $125 off Craig’s List.

It didn’t help. S/he is still very cage aggressive. But I’ll start a more detailed thread under training and I’m hoping many of you will have great suggestions on how I can get past this. :O)

Baths might help the feathers. My grey used to play a lot and her feathers looked rather unkempt from rubbing through the cage bars. It was mostly her tail feathers. They never looked perfect but bathing did help. Did the previous owner even let the bird have a bath?

Can't help much with the cage aggression except to wonder is it a territory thing or is it just that the bird is a little scared in a new place. Having worked in a shelter I'm a bit cynical of what people say about pets they are giving up. Maybe the previous owner never bothered with the bird or the bird just didn't like them and was aggressive because of that. Hopefully with some time and treats you two will be best buddies.

I really like pionus but I never see them that much at all. Still kicking myself for not buying that blue headed one when I had the chance.

I actually can't tell from the photographs, but maximilian pionus feathers do not naturally lay as flat as the feathers on most birds, anyway, even when they are in great feather condition. That doesn't mean the feather condition on yours won't improve, but they do look a bit different from other birds naturally, too.
