needing some advice

OK, My sister JessicaEs net is down so Im posting for her. Last week she got a 15 year old male grey. He was friendly and she was in love. Well the past couple days he has gotten backward. Bit her when he wanted him to step upand refused to step up at all yesterday. BUT when her husband got home he ran right up his arm. Is there someway to change his preference to her? She beside her self rightnow and Ifeel bad. any suggestions?

I don't want to sound like a negative nancy, but part of the problem is that birds are only usually one step removed from the wild -- they're not domesticated like cats and dogs and as a result they can have very particular personalities (then again, they have personalities and probably would regardless of domesticity). A lot of times larger birds DO pick men or women as a preferred gender, and in extreme cases and with specific species, often will choose just one person to shower their affection on (and sometimes will pretty much hate everyone else). For example, I had an IRN (Popcorn) who I adored, but she fell in love with my ex to the point where she screams if separated from her and lets her give scritches, etc....but if I get near her she lunges, pins her eyes, and bites the [email protected] out of me. Eventually I realized that for her happiness I was just going to have to deal with the fact that she didn't like me that much (and when we split up, my ex kept her, even though she was originally "my" bird).

It may just be that the Grey prefers guys and always will. Could be height differences (my cockatiel will almost always choose the tallest person in a room to go to, unless it's a guy. She's a man-hating feminist). Could be how he talks, his voice, his smell, his hair, or the color shirt he was wearing!

Part of me wonders if it is the novelty of him that the Grey likes? Maybe he associates her husband with something exciting? Does he give the Grey treats? Play with him? Or just let him be?

Any of those things could be a factor!

He works alot. Maybe its just the fact hes not around much. I just feel so bad. My sister is a wonderful fid mommyand she is heartbroken. She was so excited when she got him and hes not turning out how she had hoped.

She needs to be more patient and give the bird time to adjust to his new situation. If she only has him a week that is nothing, no offense to anyone but people tend to expect too much and give up way to easily.
I got my cockatoo nine years ago and now he is a wonderful companion but he did not want to have much to do with me for the first 3 years. We went through a lot of ups and downs and there were many times where I was disappointed but in the long run he turned out just fine.

Things don't happen in a week, just wait awhile, giving him extra attention, ect... Maybe have the husband not interact with the grey for a while. Hope this hepls! Sorry if anybody posted this info above! I only skimmed!

Usually when a bird picks a favorite person that is just that. The favorite person may not even like the bird, and often is not the care taker.

This doesn't mean she can't develop a relationship with the bird in time. We just can't predict that.

My avian vet, who is a bird behavioralist, suggested to a friend of mine that she transport their bird to her husband. This gave her some plusses in the bird's mind.

That is just a thought for later. It is pretty soon right now to expect much of the bird. She can enjoy talking to it and caring for it and giving it fun things for a bit until it seems more comfortable.

Thanks Shivani for the awesome siggy!

I'd just say that she should take her time and offer him treats and etc. Maybe try stick training

So niko is still being a brat.I picked him out he stepped right up for me and was loving on me. He was a super friendly hand tamed guy but my hubby ( the bird whisperer) won his heart in two days. Now I am chopped liver. I AM NOT GOING TO GIVE UP. Niko is in for a real suprise if he thinks bitting me is going to deter me. We had a senegal that did the same thing he regurgated for hubby and everything. So don(hubby) is not to look talk or touch niko. I have been giving him grapes his fav. and he is still testing me daily. I know birds are one step from wild so patience will be my weapon.
I am sure he will come around. It just sucks that he was doing so good the first week and now his true colors have come out. We tried the stick but he is afraid of them he runs and won't even think of stepping up on it. Now I am wearing a kevlar(sp) glove to get him in and he is pissed he can't bite through it. He is sweet so everyone keep your fingers crossed he will come around. So here are some pics as well
