OMG! I can't believe what I did!!!

OMG!

I went to my bird store today to get Libby (my GCC) groomed, look at the toys (of course) and get some food.

I came home with......A HAHN'S MACAW!!!!!!! I'm in shock! I'm in love! He's beautiful! He'll be one year old on November 1st and he started talking after he was home a few minutes.

I didn't plan on this at all! My friend, Cheryl, was there with her Hahn's and her Caique and she mentioned they had an adorable Hahn's for sale, so we went to look at him. I had mentioned that I wanted to get one "some day" -- I really didn't mean TODAY!!! Anyway, he wrapped his claws around my fingers, and looked in my eyes, and I was a gonner! OMG! OMG!

He'll be living in Libby's Conure Castle and Libby will be in her HQ flight cage and in the bird room to keep Angelina company. They told me at the bird shop that as long as each bird still gets individual attention from me, everything should be fine. I'll make sure of that!

He doesn't have a name yet, but Mago, Harley, and Henry are under consideration. Any ideas???

I'll post pics as soon as he's used to his new home.

I can't believe it!

Oooh, that's great!! You'll absolutely love your little mini-macaw My biggest word of advice, having raised a few Hahn's, is to be cautious with shoulder time - they like to pinch ears and necks when they're being "ignored" or don't want to step up and they have a sharp little beak, they don't have to bite hard for it to sting.

I like Harley, it'd be easy to say for a little Hahnsie

He's doing really well for his first few hours home. He's playing with and checking out all his toys and even hanging from the top of his cage by one toenail! He watches me a lot and says "hi" "hi" and makes kissey noises. SO CUTE!

I'll probably be able to take some pics tomorrow, he's doing so well.

I'm leaning towards Harley so far. Harley the Hahn's!

Oh my! That was the last thing I thought you were going to say! A Hahn's macaw. Congrats! You sound like me where each new bird is a bit bigger than the last. I like Harley or Henry. I can't wait to see photos.

LOL Bob! They are getting bigger! Angelina weighs 24 grams, Libby weighs 75 grams and "Harley" weighs 149 grams! Good thing I have an understanding hubby!

The bird shop gives a certificate for a new bird wellness exam by an avian vet (nice benefit), so I made "Harley" an appointment for next Monday, the 17th. I have no worries, since this shop (Varietee's in Valley Park, MO) sells only the healthiest birds from the best local breeders, but heck, since the checkup is FREE, why not!

I'm in the bird room now, for Libby and Angelina's playtime before bed, but I noticed "Harley" is getting sleepy, sitting on one foot and closing his eyes. Big day for him!

I'm in love, now three times over!
Will post his pic tomorrow!

Nanay - He hasn't been DNA'd, but there's a man who works part time at the bird shop and is also a long time breeder. He thinks he's a "he", since, among other things, he started talking early on. He also said Libby was a female, something about her pelvic bone, I think.

It really doesn't matter to me, since I'm not going to breed. I'm happy either way!

Bob - Libby seems just fine in the "bird room" with Angelina. They chirped back and forth all afternoon. Libby's cage was her HQ flight cage, which she used for sleeping, so she's really already used to it. I just added more toys and play stuff (you know I have plenty of toys! ).

They told me at the bird shop that as long as they each get individual attention, they should be fine. I'll still be spending time off and on during the day with each of them, plus between 6 and 7 p.m., I'll be with both of them in the bird room, so they can come out and play. Usually Libby plays and Angelina sits on my shoulder and grooms my hair, but we're all together.

Harley will be in the family room, and for right now, I don't want Libby seeing me handle Harley. I don't want her to feel "replaced", if that makes any sense. Since I'm retired, I can make sure each bird gets individual attention from me. I also want Harley to know how to play independently, just like Libby and Angelina do.

I went back to the bird room at 7 p.m., thinking I'd try to get some pics of him, but he had climbed into his tent and was softly mumbling to himself, so I guess it was bedtime for him too. I covered him up and didn't hear a peep out of him after that.

I promise pics tomorrow! And yes, I've decided to name him Harley!

I'm certain that Harley will enrich Libby and Angelina's lives with his presence, even if they only interact from afar. Birds love the company of other birds.

I'm excited for you both - all I guess.
