Unhappy Help! Severe Macaw

Hello, I'm new here because MOD Jenny recommended I come on here and tell my story in hopes someone can help me

I have to rehome the love of my life, my Severe Macaw KC.
I love her very much, but its not fair to her...
I cant keep her in the situation I'm in, so she's not getting enough attention and I dont want to be like her last home.

You see, KC was rescued. About a year ago, I saw an add, for a rock pebbler, and other parrots for sale. One of the others I was interested in was their MALE HAHNS macaw. So we went, just to take a look,
and was SHOCKED by what I saw.

The older ailing man had SEVENTEEN large birds, all in various stages of neglect. Not to mention two gazebo style aviaries filled with cockatiels and canaries. When he showed us the "hahns macaw". SHE was actually a Severe Macaw, and in a cage no bigger than for a cockatiel or a lovebird. Her gorgeous tail was split, and her feathers ragged from climbing around in this tiny cage. The cage was rusting and falling apart, and KC had nothing but striped sunflower seeds to eat, and poopy contaminated water to drink. Her cage floor was CAKED with poop, and her chest and back were plucked bare. Not to mention, her nails were so overgrown one was almost in her toe. What was left of her feathers were dingy from dirt, and SMOKING around the birds (thats right, smoking...)

Without question, I paid the 300 dollars they wanted for her.

When I came to get her, they had to cut the bars of the cage, because they couldnt find the key to the PADLOCK on her cage door.

Longer story short, KC has changed my life in ways I could never imagine. I love this bird with all my heart. She's very sweet to me and my fiance, but I cant be selfish when I know there are better homes that can address her needs. I'm crying as I write this, because I would give up everything to try to keep her, but like I said, I cant be selfish because I know someone can love her and spend more time with her.

Since I've had her:

KC has stopped plucking, and grew back all her back feathers, and some down on her chest. My guess is she will grow back some, but the 6 years of this before we got her, may mean all may not grow back.
We've been working on her to say words when she wants attention, instead of screaming and its worked rather well. Someone will probably have to try to keep this up, as she tends to like using her voice... lol (smart girl lol)
Shes been switched onto a diet of fruit and veggies, as well as Zupreem naturals pellets. (thats calmed her down a lot too)
Shes started to play with toys (she had no toys in the years before we got her)
She was really good at the vets for a check up and nail trim,
and shes started to load into a travel kennel with no problems.
She steps up, and takes treats nicely from your fingers.
She can answer the phone, say hi, hi guy (thats her dont leave me word)
And she LOVES her baths.

Please tell me someone out there has love to spare for a very beautiful (if missing feathers) loving feathered soul.

If there were any way I could keep KC I would, I love her to death.

Camille, it breaks my heart to hear your story. I so wish I would be able to help. I changed the title of your thread so people have a better idea, of you don't mind. I can change it to "Severe Macaw needs a new home" or something similar if you'd like as well, just let me know

Oh I should mention, I can probably get her to the states, I just have to figure out how to do it in terms of sending her. We are asking a small adoption fee just pretty much to cover her travel costs. Her having a good home is more important to me than the money I spent on her...

At least you've helped KC. Sending her to an even better home will be a good option for her if you can't keep her.

Shanna, Camille I don't know if this article will be of any use to you, but I'll post it anyway.

According to this birds can not be shipped to canada, but I don't know if you could still ship from canada or not.

http://www.plannedparrothood.com/shipping/shipping.html

Some other stuff I looked at said you can drive your pet bird to the us from canada, with conditions.

I'm so hoping someone will be able to take her, she needs a good home that I can feel safe with.

I most definitely am in BC right now but unfortunately wouldn't be able to take her. With a 4 month old baby I don't think we'd be able to give her enough attention either, plus we're flying home.
She is absolutely gorgeous though!
I don't remember any other people that live in the Lower Mainland that keep birds, or I'd try to find someone to take her!

Camille,
I'm so glad you came here to ask for help. Thank you for rescuing this sweet baby and giving her a second chance in life. You were meant to be her bridge to her forever home. I don't know where you live, but is there any chance that you could find a parrot rescue to take her? I suggest this because many will keep tabs on the bird for life, contractually, which is a great thing for the bird. Mini-Macaws, and Severes in particular often land in situations where they are rehomed over and over again, because they are misrepresented as being super easy, sweet, cuddly birds...but they are sooo incredibly intelligent (they are sometimes reported to rival the intelligence of African Greys), that they bore easily, and I would hate to see her rehomed again, only to have it happen again, and again, and again. At least with a rescue, they will have control over her future longterm. You are a great person for having rescued her from that terrible situation, and working with her on her problems. Big hugs and best of luck to you!

There is a rescue over by where I live in Vancouver, but the heartbreaking thing is I dont want her to go to a place that I wont be able to see her again, and not visit her or hear how shes doing.

Camille,
Oh, I hadn't thought about that and can certainly understand. You love her so much...are you certain you can't keep her? Is your time situation in any way temporary by just a few years?

Greyhaven in Burnaby is a great Parrot rescue but as you said you wouldn't be able to see or hear how she's doing in her new home, plus they already have a Macaw or two that I believe have been there for quite a while and haven't yet found homes. (the lady that runs the rescue is VERY particular who their birds go to. I attempted to adopt a Pacific Parrotlet from there before and she wouldn't accept my application because I had cats).
Anyways, I'm hoping you can find her a good home! Good luck!

The trouble is if you rehome her outside Canada u cant get her back.

I hope someone can take her.
Have you tried the other forums?
Talk budgies, talk cockatiels?
Someone in there might be thinking of a bigger bird.
