My baby arrives Thursday!

My baby galah is finally coming home! So excited. Any tips on welcoming home a new too? (S)he is being shipped to me. I live ten minutes from the airport, so that part will be short and sweet at least, but the flight is going to be a long one. Hope it's not too traumatic.

The best thing I would suggest is give her a quiet few days, let her have time to settle in to her cage. It's so hard, but resist the urge to snuggle and spoil her the first few days so she gets used to a solid routine. The biggest thing with 'toos is they come to expect that level of attention from day 1 and can become clingy They become spoiled very easily!!

The other big thing? Take lots of photos to share with us!

Oh yes, there shall be photos galore! hehe.
As for letting her out (no idea of the gender, so I'll just pick one for now lol), I'll let that happen on her terms. If she seems to want to come out and get to know us, then cool. But if she prefers to stay in the cage at first then that's okay too. She won't be getting spoiled at all, since I work full-time so I can't spend hours and hours with her on a daily basis anyway. And I have to make sure my tiels are still getting their time in with me as well.

Sounds like you've got everything in hand! Can't wait to hear how she settles in. I love galahs, they're such clowns

Congratulations on your new addition! That must be very exciting. I just got my first
cockatoo a few months ago as well. They are very needy birds, you must keep in mind!

I know that the smaller cockatoo species aren't like the umbrellas and molluccans when it comes to being clingy, so it shouldn't be a problem with your galah. Glad you're finally getting her just give her time to settle, talk to her, show her you're not too bad

Re: My baby arrives Thursday!

Woohoo!!

Congratulations!! Look forward to pics.

Personally I've found hand reared galahs need attention and reassurance. They are needy birds anyway and used to having humans for company.

If your bird is shy then don't dive into the cage or drag her out (which I'm sure you wouldn't!) in the 1st 24hrs see if she asks to come out herself. If not after the first day I'd say you should be fine to leave the door open an hour here and an hour there so she can choose to come out.

Sydney wasnt flown over but it was still a bit stressful but after a few hours he was begging to come out! He was very sociable and insisted on cuddles right away. He then clung to me during outside time for 2months but after that he learnt to play alone with toys and explore the floor and he's doing great.

I think if you have your bird out or on you 24/7 then yes you can run into problems when this routine changes but don't believe in the 'one routine for life approach'. A few hours extra when you have time wont hurt your bird x

I have no cockatoo experience ( just got my 1st tiel a month ago, and he is my biggest bird so far) but I think if I could have any bird I wanted ( and able to look after it properly of course ) it would be one of those gorgeous pink galahs!! Congrats.. Can't wait to hear how he is and see some pix!

Thanks everyone!
The suspense is just killing me; I really can't wait to meet this bird and see what she's like. I'll be sure to post lots of updates (and will likely have lots of questions too! lol).

Hmmm, I may have seen them at the time but certainly didn't bookmark them or anything. If you want to forward them that would be great. Thanks!
