Smile My galah is here!

I just picked him up from the airport...and as promised, here are pics!
I'm still waiting on the DNA test results to decide on a name.

He is still studying me and deciding what to think, but he seems like a sweet and very curious bird. I'll update on his progress as we get to know each other.

lol the guy at Delta cargo was like, "Whoah, he's pink! I've never seen a pink pigeon before."

Then he told me that he had just gotten two cockatiels, and seemed surprised when I informed him that my pink pigeon was a relative of his tiels.

Garance it looks like you have one of the very beautiful Western Australian Sub-species of Galah. The Galah's from the Eastern States are a much paler pink and grey and another sub-species that is also pale has red bare skin around the eye not grey. He is obviously young as there are not many wrinkles on the bare eye patch. They can usually be sexed about 6 months of age. With females they have a brown iris ring and the males stay black. Sometimes before that you can see the slight change in colour of the iris just sort of a lightening of the iris.

That being said it is a very beautiful bird. I love the West Australian species.

Now I'm confused! I thought the Western Australian galahs were the smaller, leaner species that also had the bumpy eye rings?
How many sub-species of galah are there anyway?
In any case, mine is exactly what I was looking for...deep, dark pink chest, good size, etc.

He is definitely hand-shy, which I wasn't really expecting, but then again maybe it's because of the stressful trip and him not knowing us. He will come up to my hands and take treats through the bars, though he is much more interested in chewing my fingers. But he gets nervous if I approach him with the cage door open, even with a treat. He is so insanely cute though!

From memory there are at least 4 species. And they all have bumpy eye rings but they come with age. The older the bird the more wrinkly they are around the eye.

A young Eastern that has not gone through it's baby moult yet will have grey flushing through the chest and abdomen.

Personally I haven't noticed any size or shape difference in them.

Oh, interesting! I didn't realize they would all eventually have the eye rings. At what age do they start to show, if you know?

Here is a post on another forum where people were discussing the size and shape differences between subspecies.

Edit: This galah is over 20 and doesn't have bumpy eye rings. I'm even more confused now!

The eye ring is not necessarily bumpy more wrinkly but then each one is different. My 2 breeding pairs are getting up into their teens at least and they are quite wrinkly around the eyes. The same goes for size in alll species. You will get some bigger than others. I only have Easterns now and a pair of Northern Territory, they are pretty much the same size. But the Eastern's child Cheekie who I bred and kept and is 6 years old now has been in a number of bird shows. One judge commented she is the biggest Galah she has ever seen. She is significantly bigger than both her parents.

Thanks for the info! They are such interesting birds. I envy you Aussies being able to see them in the wild too.
