Sambo (Short-billed Corella)

So, we went and picked up Sambo (Sam for short) a 35 year old Corella on Friday. He is very aggressive, and he hates everyone besides my mum, but hopefully with lots of time and patience, he will come around. He is quite the vocal boy, and a real chatter box, says heaps of words, and loves dancing, he is such a character and has made us laugh so much in the past 3 days he has been with us.

I got the proper background of him, well according to the girl this is his background – his parents were shot (according to the girl, it was at Taree here in NSW) and the babies were removed from the nest and hand-raised, the girls father took one of them and hand-raised Sambo himself, and then, 35 years later, her father couldn’t look after him due to being terminally ill and passed him onto his daughter, but she wants nothing to do with Sambo, so she wanted to get rid of him. We are sending off a test for Beak and Feather Disease this week, I have been stressing out about it for the past 3 days to the point where I have made myself sick.. he looks healthy, he has all his down feathers, a powdery beak, and his feet look normal (to me anyway), but someone told me that they can have it and not have any symptoms, so it can be a possibility, especially since he is from the wild, and we have no clue if his parents had it or not.

I have been doing lots of reading, and I am pretty sure he is actually a Western Corella, going by photos he looks like a lot of them.

He is a BIG boy, a lot bigger than Bubby (Galah), at least 3 times bigger, the males reach to 700g apparently.

Here are some photos of him, I will have to get some videos too, as well as a photo of his OLD cage that he was living in which is disgustingly small, and all he had was one swing.

Poor baby sounds like he's been having it rough huh. The bare eyed I was going to have must not of been the same sub-species as Sambo, as he was only about the size of a galah!

He is a short billed corella. Awesome birds but tend to bond to one person and can get very jealous. He looks really healthy so I wouldn't be too stressed about PBFD, especially if he's been a captive pet on his own for 35 years. They aren't usually 3 times the size of a galah though, usually they are roughly the same size.

He does look like a big boy! I've noticed that my goffins is smaller than bare-eyeds that
I've seen. I think it is great you have taken him in. You'll have to keep us updated on
how he is coming along!

He has settled in really well, he is absolutely crazy and so much fun, quite different to our other ‘toos. He is incredibly destructive as well, he loves chewing so we have given him plenty of natural branches which he loves, and hard wooden toys.. I plan to buy lots of extra balsa this week since we are out.

We have him eating a lot less seed now (it is limited), and on a partly better diet of fresh veggies, grains, legumes, mash, sprouts, soft soak sprouts, fruit, some cooked food mixes like Beak Appetite, and a blend I get all the birds. He is a great eater, that is for sure, I think it is put down to some people are just far too lazy when it comes to a birds diet.

Here are 2 videos of him:

Sambo is beautiful.
Thanks so much for giving him a new home.
Of course he is aggressive, because he was kept so badly for a long time.
His old cage looks like a budgie cage.
The German minimum requirements of keeping parrots say that the cage for a parrot of this size should be at least 2 x 1 x 1 meter!

Sambo looks great. I love Corella's and yes they have attitude. About his size, it varies even between siblings. Of the 4 I have had from the same family, 3 males and one female every one has been a different size. Karl was the biggest and he was really big, his older brother Kaspar who is about 20 now he is not quite as big as Karl was and younger brother who is about 5 is about the same size as Kaspar. At the same age Konnie the female was about the same size as Karl and there was only a few months difference in their ages, Karl was from the second of a double clutch. I lost Karl earlier this year and he was 7. That broke my heart, no time even for a vet, lost him to heavy metal poisoning, no symptoms until a few hours before I lost him. And he just looked a little off colour. Karl was the best talker and a great personality, he wasn't nasty just at times didn't know his own strength.

Sambo is definitely a boy. I have found that males tend to have a larger bare area around the eye and are baggier, this also increases with age.

As for PBFD, I wouldn't worry about that at all. He certainly wouldn't have lived this long if he had it, even a mild dose of it, would be noticed long before this.

Congratulations on getting Sambo. They are absolutely great birds.
