Nanna is doing well these days. She has become very opinionated about what she wants to do. Sometimes she will not step up to come out. If she refuses to come out and is whining and grouching we cover her for a hour and she takes a nap, then is more friendly when she wakes up. She loves trying to fly when we hold her so we toss her up and catch her a few times and she is very happy. For those worrying about me throwing my bird, I do it over the bed.
We have tried to get her to eat fresh fruits and veggies, not much head way here. She does like chicken though! I have been feeding her Volkmans fruit/ nut mix, and Hagens Tropimix for large parrots. She loves the stuff. She is chewing her wood toys daily. and needs fewer beak trims.
The changes in the weather affect her movements some. Arthritis like me. She does enjoy wandering around the house looking for crumbs and hidey holes!

Nanna has become quite comfortable in our home. She now sleeps on the back of the couch when we are sitting there. She reminds me of a small house dog. She likes to sit on the carpet about three feet from us and look at us, like a small dog! She has taken to sleeping on the floor of her cage. She has fallen off enough to figure its easier to just stay there. She is not ill. She has poor grip in her front toes. GOOD news is..........new tail feathers! Yep, Nanna is sprouting new feathers, finally. She is a feisty girl who loves her daddy and don't bother her because she has eyes for him only.

Oh, congrats on the tail feathers! That's wonderful news!

She is a smart one to know where it is safe to roost. Do you think the tail feathers will help with her balance?

Nanay, I don't think she will ever have excellent balance. Her longest front toes on each foot don't curl, or wrap around perches. This has not changed. She is old and has arthritis, she is achey and cranky the same days as me. She will fly someday. She practices flapping every day. She is a lot stronger these days.

Woo Hoo another pin feather coming in! I am amazed daily by her progress. It's the little things, like her alert stance and the way she leaps off anything to follow my husband. Her sharp, quick body movements are little "thank yous" for all the love and good food.

Nanay, I did notice last night one of her toes does curl around on budgie sized perches. All she needs is a good set of flights and ahe will take on some air. Then those conures are in for it!

Daisy does not like Shira at all! She is still very sweet with the tiny birds, but she does not like the medium sized birds. She now engages in the pionus strut whenever she is on a playstand and Roni enters the room.

I love it when she does the strut! She means business. Nanna will tolerate tiels eating from her dish on the couch, until they get too close to her. They want to getr that peanut, but she barks at them. The conures she will not tolerate near her, or on husband for that matter!

Doesn't it make you wonder if pionus and conures are have some generational grudge going on? Of course, they might not even inhabit the same areas in South America in the wild, but still, it seems funny to me that Daisy immediately hated Shira.

Nanna reminds me of a house dog, the way she wants things to go her way. She also sits on the couch behind my husband and guards him. They are very different from the conures.

Nanna continues to amaze us daily. She lets my husband, or me for that matter flip her onto her back in the palm of our hand. She will lay there and chew her nails . She has decded she likes Kaytee pellets best. The fruity kind, parrot size. I get it in bulk so I don't have to pay for a 5 pound bag. She eats Volkmans super parrot, and Volkmans fruit and nut mixture. She will eat fresh fruit now, she sees the conures getting apple so she has to be in on it.

Last night I had put Sophie our newest tiel baby on the couch to eat some seed and hang out with us. Well Nanna's dish is always better, so she wandered over and picked through it. Nanna let her, but wanted some also. Sophie hissed at her and Nanna backed off and sat down to watch her! I think Nanna might have a buddy, because eventually Nanna did eat from the dish while Sophie was still sitting on the rim eating.

She is getting new pins every day and lets me know if I bump one. She loves her daddy so much all his bird shirts have chewed on collars! She is a big baby.

It always makes me feel good when they pick a buddy. I have no idea if the birds prefer it or not.

This morning Nanna shared her dish with Sophie(Sebastian) again. She backs off, sits down and watches her eat, or naps for a bit. Its nice to see her interact with the tiels.

Here is a short update on Nanna. she is in full molt now! Two flights on the left and tons of new pins all around her head and neck. She is very strong now and leaps out of your hand if you don't hold her snugly enough. Her movements, the way she moves is like a young bird, very quick. Still so devoted to her daddy! She also enjoys sitting with the girls in the bedroom watching cartoons and eating. I have peeked and she is watching Sponge Bob! Our tiel Charlotte loves hanging out on her cage or sneaking in to eat Nanna's food. Nanna is letting her hang with her, its very cute. Tonight she sat in her doorway making sure no conures landed on or near daddy, but she would not step up. She was surveying her kingdom!

Do pionus everywhere hate conures? Daisy won't let Shira near her, either. She also hates Roni, but that sentiment is pretty much universal here. I like Roni, and Roni likes Roni. She is perfectly content with it that way.

I'd love to see more pictures of Nanna - not that I have a right to ask.

When Daisy first came home, she tolerated all birds. Now that she has been here a good while, she is not as laid back. She will let another bird near here while she is being misted, but that is it. She really dislikes Shira, the green cheek. However, during bath time, she will let Shira snuggle up right next to her. Shira tries to get close to her at other times, but Daisy strongly objects. It seems that the older female pionus know how to express their negative feelings just fine!
