Unhappy Goodbye my sweet Loki

My beautiful sweet Loki passed away this morning around 1...
Normally I cover cages around 9pm and then turn overhead fans on to circulate air.. then off in the morning when I uncover their cages...
Stuff happened and I was covering them around 1am. I did the 'tiels cage first then turned the fan on in the kitchen. I went into the living room for Loki's cage and got side tracked.. I turn around and my hubby had the cage open to say good night. He flew 2 laps around the living room then into the kitchen and we heard a sound. I told him that I hope he didn't just kill my bird - the fan is on. I ran in there and sure enough...there was my Loki..his spirit gone.. I am so torn with grief right now. My husband...I've never seen him so upset. We loved him so much..It's so empty with out him here.

Fly free my sweet baby bird. You shall always be missed.

I am so sorry, Christa. It feels so unfair, I bet. It was an accident and nobody's fault. May Loki rest in peace.

Oh no.... I'm so sorry for your loss... little Loki. Don't let your husband beat himself up too much - it was an accident, he couldn't have predicted it would happen.

Thank you.. I still can't believe he is gone.. my husband doesn't even want to touch any of the birds now.. We lost a 'tiel last year to egg binding. She died the morning after I got back from a trip where my hubby was taking care of the animals. I've told him that it's not his fault. It's hard to know when animals are sick sometimes - they hide it so well. And with Loki, it was just horrible, horrible timing. I hope he continues to bond with our gcc...But he feels like he the bad luck hand of death with birds now...
Thank you all again. No one truly understands my loss like all of you who love birds.

All you can do is reassure your hubby that you
#1 Love him no matter what...
#2 that you do not blame him ... he is doing enough of that himself and the " what ifs" can drive you crazy... what if the fan was off.. what if the door wasn't opened... what if he didn't fly in there... you understand what I mean...
#3 get him to continue to bond with and interact with your other birds...
#4 Be there for each other... learn from this tragedy... and remember your little friend with lots of fond memories...
Still have tears in my eyes thinking about both of you... I also have a little 'let who means the world to me.

Thank you again.
ParrotletsRock, I keep telling him it was not his fault. He wanted to rip the fans out then and there.
I know the what-ifs do no good. It won't bring him back. I was lucky to have his spirit stay a little while with me, but they must all go home...His just left me sooner than I wanted. He did not suffer, and for that I thank God.

I did mention this sort of accident in my safety thread on bird proofing your home and I'd never actually heard of it happening to anybody, it's just it's such a shame it happened to you

Yes, ceiling fans are just as much a danger as windows and such... I've always worried about it. Always check and double check before getting your babies out. I don't think I will have flighted birds again. I love to see them have their freedom of flight, but it was too high a price..
