Wiffle :(

I wanted to post this the other day but I couldn't bring my self to do it really. The cold hit VERY hard over the last few days and the three quails were doing a fantastic job of keeping each other warm. Sadly, one was not feeding or drinking. I bought her inside and kept her in a small travel cage with a heater beneath her and got her a small bottle cap of water. I got her to drink a small amount but she wasn't having any of it. I left her to it and didn't want to disturb her but I knew her time had come. I went out for just over an hour and when I got back I was told the news she passed away. I've now bought my little quails indoors just until the weather gets better. My male has been outside for the best like 3 years maybe now and has coped fine but the last two females I had both got egg bound in winter (odd, being as they don't lay when it's cold) and died suddenly within days of each other. Then this poor baby who I haven't had for too long. Maybe 9 months if a bit longer, from a HORRID basement, just keeled over. I feel so sorry for the other two. They're far happier in a trio. I just hope the cold is okay for everybody elses birds. All my others are very hardy but the quails, not so much

Rest in Peace Wiffle. You will be missed

Thank you I guess some birds just don't handle it as well as others. I mean most birds in the wild don't often survive their first winter + CPQ have to be kept indoors in winter anyways, but I always found it to be a bit of a myth. And suddenly the UK got to the coldest it has been in a long time and they're really suffering. Bubba and Coco are fine though, very happy. Like I said, I've moved them into the outdoor/indoor bird room where there is a huge tube heater under all the cages, so they are much much happier

Dear little birdlies, they seem so tough in some ways and so fragile in others. I'm so sorry they're having a tough time of it this winter. I'm so sorry you lost Wiffle, but I do know what life she had with you was the best a little quail could have.

Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly.
And never regret anything that made you smile

Sorry to hear that Daisy. It has been a wierd weather winter.maybe its the clike as they live there and heat rises.
It was -12 here last night. I'm a mile from the coast.
That temp is almost unheard of here.

I breed quails but only when the weather is warm I will have to find another female from a breeder. Quails are much happier in a trio. Thank you though.
