Gracie and Hector

Just putting out a rememberance for my Cinnamon Cockatiel Hector 2005-September 2010 and my Opaline Yellow-Faced Sky Blue Dominant Pied Budgerigar Gracie Dec 2007-February 2011.

Hectors Story: Hector origionally was bought as a gift for my grams neighbor for Christmas from her kids. She had Hector for a couple years, one day I heard a bird and i was young and curious and knocked on the door to see what mutation tiel it was. The woman gladly let me in and told me about the bird, and I told her I was studying them and I helped answer some questions for her. Hector had a nice large cage, but he was always in it because if she tried to let him out he would bite her. Every time I went to my grams i would go see Hector and we would talk forever (until my parents said it was time to go. In 2008 i knocked on the door one day and was surprised that I didn't hear Hector Breeping for me. The owner let me in and told me she could no longer care for him. She told me she gave him to a pet store towards butler. She couldnt remember the name, just that it had "Park" in the name. I was devistated.. A week later my parents took me to redlobster in the butler area. When we turned onto the plaza place i looked to my right and saw a pet store called "Pets In The Park" I just about jumped out of my seat and couldnt eat my food at redlobster fast enough. When we were done my parents went to ollies and I ran my butt over to the pet store. A cute family owened business it was. I ran inside and catching my breath I found an employee and trying to keep my cool, asked if by chance an older slightly round woman brought in a cinnamon cockatiel named Hector about a week prior. The employee was unsure of any names but knew that someone had in fact brought in a bird. A very frightened, quiet cinnamon tiel. They said the only way to see him was through the finch cages to view his cage in the back room. I soved my face up againsed that finch cage and said "Hector!" Immediately when hector saw me and heard my voice he started squaking, breeping and talking and walking all over his cage towards my direction. The employees gasped for he had been silent and non responsive the entire week he was there. They were so happy with his reaction to me that they offered him to me cuz they couldnt sell him, and he seemed to want to come with me. They never heard a cockatiel talk so much in their lives then at that very moment ^^. I then ran over and asked my parents and they unhappily agreed cuz they just knew how much I wanted him. Even though he was all worked up about comming home with me, when we got him home he wanted to be in the cage and was unsure of hands and was capital A Agressive lol I was in cyber school so every day for almost the entire day I worked with him. After a while and a few nips later he was stepping up for me. (note after a while i never asked him to step upfrom his cage. i left his cage to be his territory and after a while of doing that i let him decide when he wanted to leave it since it was always open) He would thenfly from the in-progress-aviary to the door and wait for someone to pick him up, or fly to his perch. If you were playing the wii however he would fly to your head lol. All the birds would come with me in the shower and clean themselves also ^^ Theres so much Hector and I acomplished within those 2 years and if it werent for a sharpie marker and vets not taking in emergency visits, Hector would still be around today. He passed away September 2010, and after necropsy showing he was a healthy bird it was th sharpie fumes that had done it. RIP Hector.

Gracies Story: Gracy was born December of 2007, She came to me with a sky blue dominant pied male budgie (Willie) from a rescue in 2008. Not being hand tame i had to work with her every day for 6 months before she would even step up for me. It only took willie a month to learn. But Gracie was a fiesty one and would try to bite if she didnt want held, but after a year and a half she overcame the biting. She passed away February of 2011. When I got Gracy in for the necropsy, Dr. Bennett first told me that Gracie was MALE. I was like shes wuh!!?? apparently her cere was blue and she had no overies. but I know she was female like in September, and in fall and summer. I have pictures showing her cere in breeding condition for a female. In the last 24 hours of life, she was weezing which suggests a lung or airsac problem. maybe something similar to aspergulosis. Talked to Dr. Bennet, he said her lungs were fine and airsacs perfect. I thought, how can this be?

I took her to Dr. Wagner back in September 2010, she showed signs of fatty liver disease, and i was confused about how because of the varied diet they have and everything. well Dr. bennet said the liver was pale, but it could have been post mortum, so other then that it looked fine. so i was treating her for a disease she apparently never had in the first place. Gracie got thin, and had a sharp keel , but she was heavy. so i was like ok, she picked her bum feathers and she must be having an egg. She never did get to lay, I for sure thought she might have became eggbound, my friend John thought so too. Apparently she was never pregnant.

Dr. Bennett explained to me that Gracie had a huge tumor by her liver and spleen. a TUMOR. who woulda thought.. no one ever suspected it. most get tumors by a leg, or wing where its noticeable, and more easily removed. But of course Gracies life had to be difficult.. if i woulda known i would have had it removed, no matter the cost. but this tumor, these cells decided to divide exponentially in a place where it just snuck up and came over as fatty liver, then looked like a pregnant budgie, so made us all think she got eggbound because of the fatty liver..

I wish I had documented with more pictures, it was just a freak thing i guess.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, It means alot.

RIP gracie and hector

and i dont quite understand the sharpie... im sorry but on TC we are often advised to mark eggs for breeder birds with a sharpie marker and its quite safe?

just confused here. did he eat the marker?

and i know some kinds of cancer can change the cere of males to go brown.

Sorry I was typing in a hurry at my campus library. On my iPhone now so can't edit it however, no he was in the dining room while my parents were making yard sale signs. The fumes got to him and he seemed like he got high off of it. As soon as I noticed him off balance I went to call the vet but it was too late in the evening so I had to wait till Saturday morning. And the earliest they could get him in was wedesday. No exceptions. And he passed away Tuesday morning. I knew not to have sharpie markers right by them but I didn't think he'd be affected by it being 18 feet away and all. Even considering natural deffusion of chemicals i didn't think it would be concentrated enough to kill him

they must have been using those massive big ones? i know those ones are really stinky :S because a lot of breeders use the little ones to mark eggs without problem, but they dont have much smell. who'd have thought! ive never heard of it but i guess they could do damage. learn something new each day

In glad you learned something and hope it helps with decision making in the future. I think my dad had a large one cuz I do remember smelling it. Ever since then I've never used any marker around them. And I don't breed nor do I ever plan to so I shouldnt need to mark eggs (unless an accidental matin happens which I hope not but it could happen) the only thing I ever plan to breed is rabbits and they would mostly be outside.

Such touching stories. I'm so sorry Shelby , that is just way to horrible. I didn't know about sharpie's either, I don't mark my eggs, but I do use the little one, so I'll be way more careful. The few birds I've lost have been to freak events as well.

I take it you like rabbits as well .

Wait what about rabbits? Lol are you on that forum too? Haha

But yea freak things happen and there's nothing you can do, my friend had 2 hyacinths and one died from cancer and the other passed away from choking on a but shell.. It's tragic. Especially when he didn't have them long and they are his dream birds to have..

Oh Shelby, such heartbreaking stories!

I have had to support friends and my brother who have lost their dear feathered ones, a couple I tried to rescue as I just knew their treatment was so wrong but how do you do that with close family friends, I kick myself every day for not being more forthright.

They had the sweetest tiel Jamie and a stunning canary called butter that I somehow trained to step up and sit on my arm while I played WoW for hours on end, I have never had that kind of relationship with a little yellow and I don't think I ever will again.

We are lucky, very lucky (touch wood)! We were introduced to tiels and free flying house birds when my son started grade 1(primary school), that is when we were introduced to the schools pet bird Zac, long story short, Zac has lived with us as our bird for the past 5 years roughly and would it surprise you know that our son is now 19 and Zac was at least 5 when we first met her!

It's the little things that surprise us the most!

It really is the little things that can suprise you the most! well mostly lol a large macaw cn surprise you when your not paying attention by squaking in your ear lol

I'm happy the lil canary did that while you gamed lol Hector for some reason had a thing for when you gamed he'd fly and sit on your head, especially if you were jogging on the wii fit lol then hed bounce up and down on your head!

This is a reply to ShannonH1964. Its that continuation of the post I put in the bun buns thread

Left off from "Awe they are so cute! I know how it is though. Like when Gracie was sick I should have documented with more pictures but I didnt."

Continuing it: Hectors was sudden and unknowing so it was just walk in to the bird room and find him at the bottom of the cage. God I cried forever. It was like a movie moment when you pick up/hold your dead loved one and hold them up to your face an just cover them in your tears.. and not ever wanting to let go of them.. man just thinking about it is making me tear up.. If i acted the way I wanted to I wouldnt have gone to my classes that day, but i did, but left early to sob in a corner of the lounge. Friends were pretty supportive even though i just wanted to be alone. I got depressed for months and started smoking again (but I finally realized this past December I can think of happy thoughts and I dont need to smoke so I quit mid December 2011. Meeting my boyfriend though Oct 12th 2010 Helped a bit but throughout the beginning of our relationship Id just break down and cry thinking about Hector. That Christmas he got me a star and named it after Hector. So now he has his own star <3 (I gotta stop tearing up while writing this, Im in my campus library lol) I dont break down like I used to because I put my look on death like a rebirth into the heavens. So I just pray for him to be watched over until I can be with him again -sniff- (stupid eyes lol) sorry, Didnt mean to be sad but it still gets to me sometimes.

I'm so sorry , I have to stop myself from crying too when I post about them. I really just have to not think about them . I'm not the type to cry much, even over death, but it's a different story when its one of my babies. With Aja (my parakeet) she got her head stuck in one of those ring toys and hung herself while I was gone for a doctor's appt. With Leo he got out of his cage (still don't understand how) and it was pretty grusome (my dog), while I was gone for a legal matter.

Awe.. your right though it is difficult. I don't cry much either even over people deaths. Loosing Hector was worse then anything but my boyfriend never understood it. He said you can't compare, which is true but he thinks it's worse loosing people, but that's him.. I hope you werent sniffling or crying when you typed that

Actually I was , I wanted to type more but couldn't. I also lost a 2 chicks not long ago. One was only about an hour old, it hatched to soon and the other, I had been hand raising for weeks, that one just about killed me, I think it must have been genetic though, cause I had three raised the same and the other two are about as healthy as you get.

Honestly most people I don't think get it, but to me my babies are my kids. I would mourn their deaths more so than probably any human other than my Mom.

Thank you your condolences are much appreciated I know that tw didn't deserve it yet somehow I still feel everything happens for a reason. And if there's one thing to know about me and my birds I always take them to the vet annually. When I had all 4 of them it cost me $300.

Also your welcome! I hope it just makes people a little more cautious.

Also omg just saw a coyote right out back my boyfriends house and it was sooo big
