Gracie and Hector
Just putting out a rememberance for my Cinnamon Cockatiel Hector 2005-September 2010 and my Opaline Yellow-Faced Sky Blue Dominant Pied Budgerigar Gracie Dec 2007-February 2011.
Hectors Story: Hector origionally was bought as a gift for my grams neighbor for Christmas from her kids. She had Hector for a couple years, one day I heard a bird and i was young and curious and knocked on the door to see what mutation tiel it was. The woman gladly let me in and told me about the bird, and I told her I was studying them and I helped answer some questions for her. Hector had a nice large cage, but he was always in it because if she tried to let him out he would bite her. Every time I went to my grams i would go see Hector and we would talk forever (until my parents said it was time to go. In 2008 i knocked on the door one day and was surprised that I didn't hear Hector Breeping for me. The owner let me in and told me she could no longer care for him. She told me she gave him to a pet store towards butler. She couldnt remember the name, just that it had "Park" in the name. I was devistated.. A week later my parents took me to redlobster in the butler area. When we turned onto the plaza place i looked to my right and saw a pet store called "Pets In The Park" I just about jumped out of my seat and couldnt eat my food at redlobster fast enough. When we were done my parents went to ollies and I ran my butt over to the pet store. A cute family owened business it was. I ran inside and catching my breath I found an employee and trying to keep my cool, asked if by chance an older slightly round woman brought in a cinnamon cockatiel named Hector about a week prior. The employee was unsure of any names but knew that someone had in fact brought in a bird. A very frightened, quiet cinnamon tiel. They said the only way to see him was through the finch cages to view his cage in the back room. I soved my face up againsed that finch cage and said "Hector!" Immediately when hector saw me and heard my voice he started squaking, breeping and talking and walking all over his cage towards my direction. The employees gasped for he had been silent and non responsive the entire week he was there. They were so happy with his reaction to me that they offered him to me cuz they couldnt sell him, and he seemed to want to come with me. They never heard a cockatiel talk so much in their lives then at that very moment ^^. I then ran over and asked my parents and they unhappily agreed cuz they just knew how much I wanted him. Even though he was all worked up about comming home with me, when we got him home he wanted to be in the cage and was unsure of hands and was capital A Agressive lol I was in cyber school so every day for almost the entire day I worked with him. After a while and a few nips later he was stepping up for me. (note after a while i never asked him to step upfrom his cage. i left his cage to be his territory and after a while of doing that i let him decide when he wanted to leave it since it was always open) He would thenfly from the in-progress-aviary to the door and wait for someone to pick him up, or fly to his perch. If you were playing the wii however he would fly to your head lol. All the birds would come with me in the shower and clean themselves also ^^ Theres so much Hector and I acomplished within those 2 years and if it werent for a sharpie marker and vets not taking in emergency visits, Hector would still be around today. He passed away September 2010, and after necropsy showing he was a healthy bird it was th sharpie fumes that had done it. RIP Hector.
Gracies Story: Gracy was born December of 2007, She came to me with a sky blue dominant pied male budgie (Willie) from a rescue in 2008. Not being hand tame i had to work with her every day for 6 months before she would even step up for me. It only took willie a month to learn. But Gracie was a fiesty one and would try to bite if she didnt want held, but after a year and a half she overcame the biting. She passed away February of 2011. When I got Gracy in for the necropsy, Dr. Bennett first told me that Gracie was MALE. I was like shes wuh!!?? apparently her cere was blue and she had no overies. but I know she was female like in September, and in fall and summer. I have pictures showing her cere in breeding condition for a female. In the last 24 hours of life, she was weezing which suggests a lung or airsac problem. maybe something similar to aspergulosis. Talked to Dr. Bennet, he said her lungs were fine and airsacs perfect. I thought, how can this be?
I took her to Dr. Wagner back in September 2010, she showed signs of fatty liver disease, and i was confused about how because of the varied diet they have and everything. well Dr. bennet said the liver was pale, but it could have been post mortum, so other then that it looked fine. so i was treating her for a disease she apparently never had in the first place. Gracie got thin, and had a sharp keel , but she was heavy. so i was like ok, she picked her bum feathers and she must be having an egg. She never did get to lay, I for sure thought she might have became eggbound, my friend John thought so too. Apparently she was never pregnant.
Dr. Bennett explained to me that Gracie had a huge tumor by her liver and spleen. a TUMOR. who woulda thought.. no one ever suspected it. most get tumors by a leg, or wing where its noticeable, and more easily removed. But of course Gracies life had to be difficult.. if i woulda known i would have had it removed, no matter the cost. but this tumor, these cells decided to divide exponentially in a place where it just snuck up and came over as fatty liver, then looked like a pregnant budgie, so made us all think she got eggbound because of the fatty liver..
I wish I had documented with more pictures, it was just a freak thing i guess.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, It means alot.
Gotta Love your Birdy Babies <3
